A 3-year-old boy who was hunting for Easter eggs in Britain gave his parents quite the scare on Sunday morning when he brought back a live hand grenade.

The Easter egg hunt involved children from the ages of two and five who searched for eggs in a field near the town of Holford, Somerset. The boy was spotted carrying something by another father attending the event.

According to Stuart Moffatt in an interview with the British press:

“It was brown and about four inches high. It looked like an Easter egg, but it was a hand grenade.”

Moffatt added:

“I was shocked. The boy who was standing on it thought it was a rock.”

Realizing the threat the hand grenade posed for his own wife and three children and everyone else in attendance Moffett quickly alerted organizers and the local police department and Army bomb squad were called in to investigate.

The device was in fact a live hand grenade and was detonated on the scene after the area was evacuated and secured. Police even shut down the local highway near the grenades location for several hours.

It turns out the the location of the Easter egg hunt was used during an American Army based during World War II although at this time British officials have not confirmed if the hand grenade that was discovered was a wartime relic or a more modern device.

Thankfully there were no injuries during the discovery and the area has been partially re-opened as the official investigation continues.
