An 18-year-old teen who killed his ex-girlfriend on July 31 in Southwest Baltimore, Maryland, shot himself weeks later when the SWAT team arrived at his home on a search warrant.

Christian Hursey shot Jada Sellers, 17, in the abdomen and throat, leaving her in critical condition. She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead two weeks later.

On August 20, police arrived at Hursey’s home with a search warrant and found him dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A BPD statement noted, “Upon entering the residence, officers heard a single gunshot coming from the basement.”

Officers immediately responded and found Hursey suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. According to Sellers’ family, the two were in a relationship, and the family knew Hursey.


After investigation, it was uncovered that Hursey’s childhood was heavily impacted due to domestic violence. His father, Dominick Hursey, 44, was sentenced to prison time after he was convicted of first-degree murder in April 2017. Dominick killed his wife Chinika while Christian was just four years old.

There was also a history of domestic abuse, as Chinika filed for protective orders against her husband. She communicated that her husband could kill her, and her fears came true. 

According to the protective order, he once showed up at her work and threatened to break her face. In another incident, he had grabbed her arm and twisted it. He also pinned her against the car while putting one hand on her neck. The protection order stated he had to stay away from her home. This is the same home where the 18-year-old killed himself.

Dominick broke a window and went into the house on April 3, 2017, as seen on surveillance video. He killed his ex-wife’s boyfriend, shooting him 12 times and shooting Chinika three times in the back of her head as she slept.

After committing the crime, he tried to cover it up; however, he was found guilty. Prosecutor Robin Coffin described it as “a cold-blooded execution of two people” that left seven children orphaned.

Many experts are connecting the history of crime, domestic abuse, and its impact on the children of the house. Adam Rosenberg, executive director of LifeBridge Health’s Center for Hope, told CBS, “It’s horrific that this child who lost his own mother to gun violence is now repeating the cycle himself.”


He explained such exposure to violence may increase the risk of a person becoming a victim or perpetrator of similar situations. Exposure to violence can increase the risk of someone later becoming either a victim or perpetrator.

Sellers’ friends and family gathered for her final viewing the day before her funeral. The family is grieving the loss and is in shock, as they had welcomed Hursey into their home.

Sellers’ cousin Heber Brown said, “Not only did we know him, but he sat at the table eating meals with our family. We know of his family and some of the challenges that they faced. And so, it’s a different kind of grief. It’s a different kind of burden and the weight that comes with this situation.”

Sellers was going to start her senior year at Milford Mill Academy right before her tragic murder. One of her teachers, Kyra Hamond, said, “Of course, our hearts are heavy, but what’s most important is the impact that she’s had on all of us. We remember her as a strong individual, a beautiful individual.” Sellers’ family hopes for awareness against violence against women and girls so that no one suffers like this again.
