An 8-month-old baby died after being left in a hot car for hours, according to authorities.
The Lousiville coroner has ruled that the death of the 8-month-old boy was accidental, due to the father having left the child in the hot car for hours after forgetting to drop him off at a day care. The father left the child in the car, strapped into a child seat, as he went to work about five miles away from their home. Lincoln Lindsay was pronounced dead at 6:17 p.m. on Monday according to Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Jo-Ann Farmer. The cause of death is officially being ruled as, “complications of environmental exposure to ambient heat inside a closed car.”
Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman Carey Klain told local news stations that the child’s parents have undergone questioning, but no charges are being filed against them at this time. The investigation is still ongoing, however. Because the parents are not being charged, their names cannot and have not been released.
The temp on Monday in Lousiville was 89 degrees according to the National Weather Service . Authorities said that the temperature in the car was easily over 100 degrees, according to Daily News .
Though this is being ruled as an accidental death, accidental deaths among children have actually decreased in recent years. The unintentional death rate for children from birth to age 19 declined by nearly 30% from 2000 to 2009, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
