George H.W. Bush Participates In Gay Wedding

Former President George H.W. Bush made an appearance this week, serving as witness at a gay wedding.

While George H.W. Bush has not been in perfect health lately, the former Commander In Chief was on hand for the same-sex wedding of two lesbian friends of the family.

The elder Bush looked great for his age as, from a wheelchair, he signed the marriage license of the two women pictured alongside him.

One of the pair tweeted the image, which later spread around on news outlets due to its novelty. The Washington Post reports:

“Former President George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara served as an official witnesses Saturday at the Maine wedding of Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen, co-owners of a Kennebunk general store. Thorgalsen posted a photo on Facebook of the 41st commander-in-chief signing a set of documents for them at an outdoor celebration: ‘Getting our marriage license witnessed!’ ”

As the image of George H.W. Bush and wife Barbara at the gay marriage license signing bounced around the web, Bush spokesman Jim McGrath released a statement about the image, saying:

“They were private citizens attending a private ceremony for two friends.”

Clement, 60, says she and Thorgalsen have been together for 12 years — and the pair were thrilled at the Bush family’s role in their big day:

“This is such a wonderful time for change in our legal system… Who would be best to help us acknowledge the importance of our wedding as our friends and as the former leader of the free world. When they agreed to do so we just felt that it was the next acknowledgment of being ‘real and normal.’ ”
