Autistic Boy Hate Letter: Police Deny Hate Crime Charge

The family of an autistic boy received a hate letter from an anonymous neighbor. Despite the threatening nature, The Crown Attorney’s Office has ruled that it was not a hate crime.

The typed letter was left in the mailbox of Brenda Millson. It was addressed to “the lady living at this address.” The content of the letter was aimed toward 13-year-old Max Begley, who is autistic.

Printed on pink paper, the letter accuses Max of being a general nuisance in the neighborhood. The writer suggests that he should be kept inside the house or taken to the park, as he is guilty of “noise polluting wailing.”

As reported by Fox 8, the letter continues with numerous accusations and insults. The writer closed the letter with a suggestion that Max be euthanized. The letter was signed “One pi**ed off mother.”

Max’s father works during the day, and his mother suffers from multiple sclerosis. He often spends time at his grandmother’s home.

The family is devastated that the autistic boy was the subject of a hate letter. Max’s father James is concerned about his son’s safety:

“If someone is sick enough to not only have those thoughts, but to write those thoughts out and then to mail them… they should be considered dangerous. We are all concerned.”

The letter’s content is incredibly disturbing. However, the Durham Regional Police Service has announced that it cannot be considered a hate crime.

Officials have stated that they are taking the matter seriously, and may pursue other criminal charges.

The writer of the letter has not come forward, and authorities have not discussed any leads. Max’s family is upset about the letter. However, other neighbors have shown great support.

More than 100 people gathered outside Max’s grandmother’s home on Sunday night. They wanted Max to know he is welcome in the neighborhood.

The autistic boy does not know about the hate letter, or the outrageous insults. However, he is excited that so many neighbors have been visiting the home.
