Serena Williams Wins Comfortably, Advances To Third Round Of Wimbledon

Things returned to normal at Wimbledon on Thursday when Serena Williams, as expected, won her match against French player Caroline Garcia.

This time around the All England Club has seen its fair share of shocking upsets including Rafael Nadal losing in the first round and Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova exiting on Wednesday.

Fans on Court 1 might have been thinking that this would be another upset of a top seed when Garcia came in winning the first game 40-0, but Williams settled down after that and did away with her rival relatively easily.

Williams will play Japan’s Kimiko Date-Krumm in the third round who at 42 is the oldest woman to reach the third round of Wimbledon in the Open era.

In related happenings, news of a possible exhibition match between Briton Andy Murray and Serena Williams gained more traction today.

A Twitter follower challenged Murray to play against Williams on grass saying, “I recon Serena Williams could beat u on grass.. And I’m not even joking.”

To which Murray responded, “me too! Maybe we can set it up one day and see how close I get.”

Serena Williams will return to Wimbledon on the weekend.

Writing for a column on the BBC Murray kept the possibility alive:

“I’ve never hit with her, but she’s obviously an incredible player and I think people would be interested to see the men play against the women to see how the styles match up.It’s happened in the past with Jimmy Connors and Martina Navratilova. How about Las Vegas as a venue?”

When asked to comment on Murray’s interest Williams looked incredulous:

“Really?” she asked laughing. “He wants to play me? Is he sure? That would be fun. I doubt I’d win a point, but that would be fun. He’s probably one of the top three people I definitely don’t want to play. But, yeah, maybe we can have a little bit of a showdown.”

Of her match she said she is adjusting and knows she can play better.

“I’m like ‘Serena, stay focused.'” she commented.
