Community star Gillian Jacobs will be joining her former fellow cast member in the sequel to Hot Tub Time Machine.
Jacobs will play the female lead in the Steve Pink-directed film. She joins Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke, and Adam Scott. John Cusack, however, will not be returning for the sequel.
No word has been given on exactly how Jacobs’ character will fit into the story, but Corddry previously revealed that the sequel would feature the group from the original film — sans Cusack — traveling 10 years into the future, where they meet Scott’s character, who is the son of Cusack’s character.
Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is scheduled to begin filming later this month, according to a previous report by Robinson.
The original Hot Tub Time Machine was released in 2010 and grossed over $64 million worldwide, making back more than double its $30 million budget. The time travel comedy received generally positive reviews from critics, and has received a 63 on Metacritic and a 63 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The first film saw three longtime friends, and one of the men’s nephews (Duke), all of whom are fairly miserable about their lives, reunite at the old ski resort where they used to hang out. When the group enters a magical jacuzzi, they are transported back to the year 1986. While in the past, the friends try to avoid making the same mistakes they made the first time around, and take advantage of the opportunity to make things better for themselves in the present. Of course, since they are transported back to the ’80s, there are appearances from several ’80 stars such as Chevy Chase, Crispin Glover, and Billy Zabka (Johnny Lawrence in The Karate Kid).
In the meantime, you can see Gillian Jacobs on the upcoming fifth season of Community. The series was, surprisingly, renewed last month, and will see the return of series creator and showrunner Dan Harmon.
