Detroit’s Drew and Mike will be replaced with Dave and Chuck “the Freak” as of May 17, according to reports. Drew and Mike have been part of the WRIF-FM (101.1) morning team since 1994.
Dave Hunter and Charles Urquhart, better known as Dave and Chuck “the Freak,” left 89X Windsor in November of 2012. As they signed a no-compete contract, the duo has been off the air for six months.
As reported by Crains Detroit, fans have speculated for months where they pair would end up. Although WRIF officials have not confirmed the rumors, it is expected that Drew and Mike will be replaced with Dave and Chuck “the Freak,” as the six months are almost up.
Greater Media, which owns WRIF, has issued a statement concerning the programming change:
“We would like to thank Drew, Mike, Trudi and the entire team for their many contributions to the station over the years in the Motor City … They are true professionals and we are very grateful to them.”
Additionally, Greater Media officials stated that “an exciting announcement” was on the way.
Greater Media market manager Steve Chessare pointed out that media has changed and the Drew Mike show was not doing as well in the ratings as they had in the past. As reported by the Detroit Free Press, Dave and Chuck “the Freak” have shown consistently high ratings among Detroit area listeners, which may had led to the decision.
Drew and Mike plan to spend their last day on the air taking calls calls from listeners, and reminiscing about the last 19 years. As their contract has expired, their future plans are unknown.
Fans have flooded the Drew and Mike Facebook page with regrets about their dismissal.
Dave and Chuck “the Freak” have continued to maintain their Facebook site as well. Their fans have left comments welcoming them back to the airwaves.
Fans of both morning show teams have strong feelings about Drew and Mike being replaced by Dave and Chuck “the freak.” Both teams have spent years entertaining their fans, every morning, five days a week.
