During a Thursday statement Google CEO Eric Schmidt announced that “at least” 65,000 mobile phones are now shipping daily with the Google Android based mobile operating system.

The announcement, which came at Google’s annual shareholder meeting in Mountain view, California includes 34 different mobile devices, now available in 49 countries.

During his speech, which was streamed live on YouTube, Schmidt said:

“It looks like Android is going to be either the number one or number two player” adding “Our partners are shipping about 65,000 Android handsets per day but if you check the blogosphere you’ll discover there are some reports that that number might be quite low.”

Larry Page, a co-founder of Google also spoke and said the strategy of getting more Google Android based devices on the market was simple, by doing so they can gain more traction:

“Through more (Google) searches and other things that we do.” while he added “I think you’ll see that as those products mature we’ll figure out how to make more money from them.” [DroidFreeApps via AFP]
