Ryan Gosling’s stylish revenge thriller Only God Forgives dropped its second trailer online this week, showing us a bit more on the action side of the anticipated crime film.
Only God Forgives reunites Gosling with director Nicolas Winding Refn, after the two collaborated on 2011’s critically acclaimed neo-noir Drive. The film also stars English-French actress Kristin Scott Thomas as Gosling’s mother, described as “a merciless and terrifying mafia godmother,” who sets Gosling’s character on his course in the film.
The synopsis for Only God Forgives is as follows:
“Julian lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna, arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.”
Gosling called the script for the film “the strangest thing I’ve ever read and it’s only going to get stranger.”
Other big news for Only God Forgives this week: The film officially made the competition roster for the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where it will compete for the Palme d’Or.
