Actor Clive Mantle, who plays Greatjon Umber in HBO’s uber-successful Game of Thrones, has lost part of his ear after a bloody hotel attack early Sunday.
After finishing up a run of The Ladykillers at the Theatre Royal, Mantle reportedly asked other guests at the Newcastle Travelodge to keep the noise down, making the biting of his ear the most direct way to solve the problem, in a darkly ironic way.
The 55-year-old has luckily had his ear sewn back on. A 32-year-old man from Hamilton in South Lanarkshire has been charged with biting Mantle’s ear off, though they call it “wounding with intent.” He’s scheduled to appear before magistrates next month.
A rep for Mantle said that the actor was pinned to the floor in the hotel and attacked for asking other guests to keep the noise down. The top part of his right ear was bitten off.
“He is very shaken and shocked by what has happened, you don’t expect this kind of thing to happen in a hotel. The part of the ear that was bitten off was found and sewn back on. Mr. Mantle said the police, ambulance and hospital staff were amazing,” the spokesperson said.
Though The Ladykillers wrapped up in Newcastle Saturday, the tour is set to continue in Salford on Tuesday. Producers are hoping that Mantle makes a speedy recovery and that he’ll re-join the cast soon.
“Clive doesn’t yet know when he will be able to rejoin the cast and feels he must mention the ambulance crew, police and hospital staff who were all superb,” said a publicist for the play. “Fiery Angel, producers of The Ladykillers, are horrified by the events of Sunday morning and are doing everything they can to ensure Clive has a speedy recovery.”
Mantle is arguably most famous for playing surgeon Mike Barrett in the hit English TV show Casualty and its spin-off series Holby City for over nine years. He also plays Lord Greatjon Umber, an ally of House Stark, in Game of Thrones.
Interestingly, his character had two fingers bitten off his left hand in the show:
