‘Borderlands 2’: Sixth Character On Its Way

Borderlands 2 fans should be happy to know a sixth character is on its way.

Gearbox debuted a teaser-trailer at SXSW this weekend for a sixth Vault Hunter. The new Borderlands 2 character appears to be less focused on guns and primarily meant for melee. This could add more replay value or simply be another character we never play. The verdict is still out.

The teaser-trailer read in the midst of something brutally beating enemies, “Deep beneath Pandora, an experiment has escaped. Bandits beware, a new vault hunter is coming. More mayhem awaits.”

Matt Armstrong, Gearbox franchise director, says we won’t “have to wait long until we see that character.” And Borderlands 2 fans everywhere probably perked up when they read that. The sixth character has been mostly a rumor up to this point, a victim of “will-they-won’t-they” speculation. But if the director says it’s coming soon, you can take that to the bank. Armstrong adds that DLC is announced on a very tight schedule.

A melee character in Borderlands 2 also rings familiar after comments made by both Matt Armstrong and Jonathan Hemingway. They both lamented Borderlands 2‘s lack of a melee character like Brick. Armstrong and Hemingway liked the stacking mechanics introduced by the Mechromancer, but whether or not this element is involved in the sixth character remains to be seen.

Speculation based on the teaser-trailer for Borderlands 2‘s sixth character indicates it may be a robot or mutant of some kind (“Deep beneath Pandora, an experiment has escaped”). If it turns out to be a robot, it may very well be a new Mechromancer built as a bullet-resistant melee fighter. And if it’s a mutant, it may have been created as a kind of Vault Hunter superhero. Again, this is just speculation.

The new Borderlands 2 DLC melee character, however, is not part of the Season Pass.
