James Cameron was a target for Golden Globe hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and the ex-wife of the famous director couldn’t have been happier.
In their opening monologue for the award show, Poehler and Fey took aim at several audience members with their biting humor, but one of the biggest laughs came when they addressed Kathryn Bigelow, James Cameron’s ex-wife. Bigelow was nominated for Zero Dark Thirty, her movie about the mission to kill Osama bin Laden, but the film has drawn controversy for its portrayal of torture to get information on the al Qaeda leader’s location.
Poehler and Fey addressed the controversy, and in doing so took a shot at James Cameron.
Amy Poehler said: “When it comes to torture, I trust the lady who was married to James Cameron for 3 years.”
As Poehler delivered the line, the camera turned to the audience to find Kathryn Bigelow enjoying the line with a big laugh. It was a bit of a consolation for being snubbed in the Best Director category at the Oscars.
The rest of the reactions were varied, Hollywood.com noted:
“Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster seem similarly tickled—if anyone knows about torture, onscreen and off, it’s Gibson. On the left, Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty star, Jessica Chastain, however, looks about as shocked as Hillary Clinton in that famous White House situation room shot taken during the Osama bin Laden raid. And, on the right, Joaquin Phoenix proves once and for all that he’s unfamiliar with this concept called ‘humor.’ “
James Cameron wasn’t the only celebrity to become joke fodder for Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, The Hollywood Reporter noted. Fey also called Quentin Tarentino “the star of all my sexual nightmares,” and said of past host Ricky Gervais, “[He] could not be here tonight because he is no longer technically in show business.”
