Jerry Seinfeld Snubbing A Hug From Kesha 3 Times In A Row Is Hilarious: ‘I Don’t Know Who That Was’

If there’s one thing that we all learned from watching Seinfeld, it’s that its co-creator and star Jerry Seinfeld is rather particular. Even though it has now been 19 years since the hit comedy went off the air, it appears as though the comedian is still just like his character, because footage of Jerry Seinfeld rejecting the opportunity to hug singer Kesha, despite the singer asking three times to do so, has emerged.

The hilarious incident actually unfolded on Monday at the National Night Of Laughter And Song hosted by The David Lynch Foundation at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Jerry Seinfeld was busy talking to the press when suddenly Kesha made a beeline for the actor and comedian, and immediately requested to have a hug with him.

After the singer declared and then asked Jerry Seinfeld, “Hey, I’m Kesha, and I love you so much. Can I give you a hug?” the comedian didn’t miss a beat with his response of “No thanks.” But it wasn’t just Jerry Seinfeld’s words that shot down Kesha’s offer so emphatically, it was also the way that he grimaced, which suggested that even the slightest amount of bodily contact with her would instantly repulse him.

The scenario continued to get even more awkward, though. Unperturbed by Jerry Seinfeld’s rejection, Kesha then responded with “Please” and “Just a little one.” But Jerry Seinfeld stood strong and told her “No thanks” and “Yeah, no thanks” to her continued requests. At this point, Kesha finally knew that she had been beaten, as she scuttled away from both Jerry Seinfeld and the gathered press, while at the same time voicing her dismay at not getting her desired hug.

Jerry Seinfeld simply laughed off the situation, before then turning to the man that was interviewing him and remarking, “I don’t know who that was” — which is a pretty good reason for turning down a hug. After being informed that it was actually hit songstress Kesha, who has had three No. 1 hit singles in the shape of “Tik Tok,” “We R Who We R,” and “Timber,” Jerry Seinfeld was left just as nonplussed, but did add the caveat of, “OK, well I wish her the best.” You can watch the entire incident unfold below.

Jerry Seinfeld was probably rather wise to reject Kesha’s request for a quick cuddle. That’s because Kesha previously drank her own urine on television for her MTV special KeSha: My Crazy Beautiful Life. Kesha did this as part of her experimental health regimen, which was a suggestion from a friend. Kesha subsequently opened up about drinking her own urine to the Hollywood Reporter.

“I heard it was good for you. That was, like, the rumor. But I don’t know. I’m also just one that doesn’t shy away from things. I’m not good at saying ‘no’ so I just figure, f**k it, I’ll try anything once. So I tried it. I wouldn’t recommend it. It was pretty gross. And I don’t think it really did anything very beneficial to me so, yeah, I wouldn’t probably do it again.”

Over the course of Seinfeld‘s 180-episode run, it was made very clear that the character of Jerry Seinfeld was a clean freak. While that might have been exaggerated for comedic effect, the fact that he wasn’t interested in the slightest in hugging Kesha suggests there was some truth to it, and if he had known that the singer had previously drunk her own urine, he probably would have run away from her instead.
