Pirates of the Caribbean 5 with Johnny Depp just grossed over half a billion dollars for Disney. Depp is loved worldwide for his role as Captian Jack Sparrow, and that has translated to $501.6 million so far globally according to Variety.
Pirates of the Caribbean and the magnetically charismatic role of Jack Sparrow has proven once again that Johnny Depp is a tremendous international box office draw. Though Johnny has had a really rough year in the press, with a lot of negative publicity, Johnny’s obvious charisma and talent continue to rise above the clamor.
Johnny Depp isn’t just an American icon, Depp’s Jack Sparrow continues to be a profitable worldwide sensation. Of the $2 billion Disney has earned so far in 2017, about one-quarter came from Pirates of the Caribbean 5, and the money is still rolling in.
Pirates of the Caribbean 5 was released early in China according to IMDb. Johnny Depp’s newly released film came to Chinese theaters first, on May 11 and so far fans in China have shelled out $142.6 million to see the Disney film with Johnny as Jack Sparrow.
Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow fans in China made Pirates of the Caribbean 5 the fourth largest Disney film opening day ever in the history of Disney movies on May 11. Money has continued to pour into the Chinese box office with the record-breaking sales still climbing.
Domestically, Americans paid $114.6 million so far. It was number one in box offices for Memorial Day weekend, but overall, Memorial Day didn’t pay off in the United States as it has in the past. Still, the movie continues to produce revenue in the U.S. as well as box offices worldwide.

Johnny Depp’s Russian fans provided the second highest overseas market, paying $30.5 million to view Pirates of the Caribbean 5. Korea brought in $17.9 million, while the UK accounted for $16.7 million and France was fifth with $15.2 million.
Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is also number one in Mexico as well as Spain. Jack Sparrow was overwhelmingly well received by a global audience.
Jack Sparrow won’t hit theaters in Japan until July 1, but fans are reportedly eager to see Pirates of the Caribbean 5 in Japan. Kuwait will have to wait as well; the Pirates of the Caribbean release date there isn’t until June 22.
In 2003, foreign markets accounted for 53 percent of the worldwide gross for Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. In 2011 the international market for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides accounted for 76 percent of the gross, according to Deadline.
