It’s been a confusing week for wrestling fans and especially for fans of The Undertaker. As most WWE fans are well aware, The Undertaker came in from the cold last month when he returned to the ring as SmackDown celebrated its milestone 900th episode at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
Wrestling Inc. reported, “The Undertaker’s return was his first appearance in a WWE ring since he defeated SmackDown LIVE Commissioner Shane McMahon inside Hell in a Cell at WrestleMania 32.”
Since The Undertaker returned to the WWE ring, there has been a host of speculation and rumor over how his career will progress. It has been widely reported that The Undertaker would face off against John Cena at WrestleMania 33. Then, stories began to float claiming that The Undertaker vs. Cena matchup was off. Wrestling Inc. poured cold water on those rumors, stating that The Undertaker’s plans for WrestleMania “are the same as they originally were.” That suggests The Undertaker’s match with Cena should still happen in Florida in April.
So, Is The Undertaker vs. AJ Styles Going To Happen?
Since The Undertaker returned to the ring many have wondered if he could land a matchup with the man who currently tops the WWE Power Rankings. AJ Styles has had a formidable 2016 and no one would doubt that 2017 could prove to be a huge year for the current world champion. Styles, 39, has long been regarded as one of wrestling’s greatest performers, and many fans would love to see a Styles vs. The Undertaker match-up.
AJ Styles was interviewed by a Spanish broadcaster over the weekend, and he certainly didn’t rule out taking on The Undertaker. Styles was asked if he thought that a match with The Undertaker would be a “dream WWE match.”
“It might be a dream match for The Undertaker, but is it a dream match for the WWE? If the public want to see a match between AJ Styles and The Undertaker, then I say let’s give it to them.”
Rumor has it that a match between Styles and The Undertaker could take place as early as next month’s Royal Rumble. Sports Keeda reports that The Undertaker would be a perfect choice to face AJ Styles. They name The Undertaker as one of five dream opponents for Styles.
“The Undertaker announced that he would be more active on the road to Wrestlemania this year, which would definitely entail a match for the ‘Deadman’ at this years’ Royal Rumble.
“With the WWE looking to fill the 60,000 seater Alamodome, a headline match involving the Undertaker is just what the doctor ordered and Styles is the perfect opponent for him.”
Of course, Styles would have relative youth on his side were he to face off against the 51-year-old Undertaker. There is no doubt that The Undertaker is a living WWE legend, but his lack of mobility, as his age creeps up on him, could prove his undoing against the current world champion.
ESPN reports that Styles seems to be unstoppable at the moment. His wins against Chris Jericho at WrestleMania and Dean Ambrose have topped off what they call “one of the best debut years in WWE history.” Since making his WWE debut at the 2016 Royal Rumble, Styles has dominated the WWE wrestling scene.
It seems unlikely that even The Undertaker could topple AJ Styles from the top of the WWE. Styles is a formidable challenge for any wrestler, more so for a star like The Undertaker who is arguably past his prime. That said, it seems The Undertaker vs. AJ Styles is the matchup that many WWE wrestling fans want to see. The match would be a huge draw for wrestling fans and would doubtless help the WWE to fill those huge arenas.
