Selena Gomez To Make A Surprise Appearance At The American Music Awards?
Fans might get to see more of Selena Gomez after all. The pop star is expected to make a surprise appearance at the 2016 American Music Awards. Will Gomez leave rehab in time for the show?
According to Celeb Buzz, the producer of the American Music Awards, Larry Klein, just teased that Gomez might attend the award ceremony this weekend. The news comes as a surprise because Gomez is still in rehab after taking a break from her summer tour.
The “Hands to Myself” singer canceled her tour because of struggles with depression and anxiety. E! News reports that Gomez released an official statement to fans on social media, blaming lupus for her recent mental health issues.
“As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways,” Gomez told fans.
“I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.”
Gomez added, “I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off. Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues.”
Gomez checked herself into a rehab facility in Tennessee in October. She has not made an official public appearance at an event of this caliber since entering rehab. Will the AMAs be her highly anticipate comeback?
Despite remaining out of the spotlight for some time, fans spotted Gomez at a Texas Roadhouse last month. The singer ate a light lunch at the restaurant and appeared in high spirits.
“She enjoyed herself and was there for a late lunch,” an inside source revealed at the time.
“She couldn’t have been more gracious to everyone and to the fans and was more than happy to take pictures with whoever.”
Of course, there will be plenty of cameras on hand if Gomez decides to attend the American Music Awards. She also has the chance of taking home an award, which would launch her further into the spotlight. Gomez was nominated in the categories of Artist of the Year and Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist.
This isn’t the first time Gomez has been to the prestigious awards ceremony. Back in 2014, she performed her hit track, “The Heart Wants What It Wants” and came back a year later to sing “Same Old Love.”
The only difference, aside from Gomez’s stint in rehab, is that her former flame Justin Bieber is also set to perform. According to Daily Mail, Bieber has been busy with his worldwide “Purpose Tour” but is taking time away to sing at the AMAs.
Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber have dated on-and-off for past few years. Rumors indicated that his summer romance with Sofia Richie sparked Gomez’s latest downward spiral.
In fact, the former couple exchanged heated words on social media after Bieber shared pictures of Richie online. Bieber slammed fans for their negative comments and Gomez hit back, saying “If you can’t handle the hate then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend lol – it should be special between you two only. Don’t be mad at your fans. They love you.”
Bieber fired back, “It’s funny to see people that used me for attention and still trying to point the finger this way. Sad. All love. I’m not one for anyone receiving hate.”
The pop star deleted his social media account shortly after the spat with Gomez. For her part, Gomez recently opened up about her relationship with Bieber and explained that they are still good friends.
“There’s closure in a very good, healthy way,” she explained.
“We’ve seen each other. I’m always encouraging and I am proud of his journey. I think people are making it out to be something that is more tragic than it really was. We both made mistakes. That’s it.”
Bieber is also up for Artist of the Year at the AMAs, which pits him against Gomez, Adele, The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Beyonce, Drake, Twenty One Pilots, and Carrie Underwood.
Gomez has yet to confirm her participation at the AMAs, though Hollywood Life reports that she just dropped a new music video for her song, “Trust Nobody.” Does this mean that Gomez is ready to make an epic return this weekend?
Sadly, Gomez did not appear in the new video and still hasn’t posted to social media in months, so there’s no telling if she will get out of rehab in time for the event.
Fans can watch the American Music Awards, which will be hosted by Jay Pharaoh and Gigi Hadid, on Nov. 20 on ABC.
