Heatley traded to the Sharks

Dany Heatley is an Ottawa Senator no more. For the second time in his career the talented player has demanded a trade leaving his current team to try to accommodate him. This drama has been going on in Ottawa for most of the summer. Why he wanted out of Ottawa isn’t exactly clear, but he thinks that the new coaching staff doesn’t believe in him enough. Really this is just a case of another spoiled athlete getting his way.

Thankfully the Senators and General Manger Bryan Murray were able to work a deal that is acceptable to them. Really it looks like Murray was willing to head into the season with the disgruntled Heatley still on his roster. Thankfully this deal gets done and the two sides can move on to something better.

So let us take a look at the details. The San Jose Sharks get Heatley and a 2010 fifth round draft pick, and the Senators get LW Milan Michalek, RW Jonathan Cheechoo, and a 2010 2nd round draft pick. For the Senators these two players will fill the need of the team to find some secondary scoring behind their number one line of Daniel Alfredson, Jason Speeza, and Heatley’s replacement Alex Kovalev.

In the end this is a pretty good deal for both clubs. The Sharks get a star in Heatley and the Senators get some much needed depth. We have to wonder though how long it will be before Heatley demands a trade from San Jose?
