Kim Kardashian Warned She Could ‘Bleed To Death’ Due To ‘Retained Placenta’

Kim Kardashian revealed that she’s ready for another baby, but potential pregnancy complications made the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star consider using a surrogate. On the November 13 episode of KUWTK, Kim visited two doctors and both advised her not to get pregnant again. The mom-of-two was told that a third pregnancy might severely endanger her health. Kim experienced previous complications in her last two pregnancies. Kardashian West’s doctor said she may be at risk for a serious pregnancy complication called a retained placenta, according to People.

“You never know if you might have the same type of problem that could be more serious this time… You’re always taking a little bit of a chance. There are situations where retained placenta could be life or death.”

After meeting with Dr. Paul Crane, Kardashian’s OB-GYN, Kim sought out a second opinion from her fertility specialist, Dr. Wong.

“Using a surrogate is not an unreasonable option… If our goal is to grow your family like you want to, then a surrogate makes sense.”

During Kim’s first pregnancy, she had preeclampsia. This is a condition which involves high blood pressure and placenta accreta, which is a type of retained placenta.

What Is ‘A Retained Placenta’?

According to the Mayo Clinic, placenta is the organ that nourishes the fetus in the womb. A retained placenta means that the placenta is not delivered from the woman’s body within one hour after her baby is born. The placenta is usually delivered shortly after birth. The passage of this organ is considered the third stage of labor.

“If the two doctors, that I trust, have told me it wouldn’t be safe for me to get pregnant again, I have to listen to that… But because I don’t know anyone that has been a surrogate or used one, I didn’t really think about that as an option for me.”

There is also a possibility for the placenta to invade the muscles of the uterus or grow through the uterine wall. Due to the high risk a third pregnancy can create, the doctor told Kim to consider using a surrogate.

“I’m more worried, because I gave birth to two. There’s a sense in me that because I went through all that pain for these two babies and that I know we did this together… There’s no one that would feel your love [like this baby], they are literally near your heart and inside of you.

“My bond with my kids is so strong… I think my biggest fear is that if I had a surrogate is, would I love them the same? That’s the main thing I keep thinking about.”

In women with placenta accreta, the placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall and does not detach as it should after birth, according to the Mayo Clinic. This pregnancy condition can be life-threatening because it can lead to severe bleeding as Kim’s mother noted.

“You could bleed to death.”

Some of the risk factors for the condition are having a previous surgery on the uterus, being over the age of 35, and giving birth previously, according to the Mayo Clinic. Kardashian is 36 years old and has given birth to two children. Kim also had a surgery after her first child to remove the leftover placenta.

Through blood imaging tests, doctors are sometimes able to diagnose placenta accreta before a woman gives birth. Women who are suspected to have placenta accreta during pregnancy will likely need a C-section, followed by additional surgery to remove the uterus after birth, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Kim sat with Kris Jenner to weigh the final pros and cons of having a surrogate.

“I’ve come to the conclusion in my mind that I can’t carry another one. So now I want to explore surrogacy… Also, the best thing, I could have a new baby and have no one know and live my life for a good year before we announce it… But I don’t know if it’s for me… I really don’t know.”

Will Chrissy Teigen Be Kim Kardashian’s Surrogate?

Kim Kardashian’s “MILF” music video co-star, Chrissy Teigen, offered Kim K. a huge favor. No, it wasn’t to babysit North and Saint West, but to be the gestational mother of Kim and Kanye’s third child. Yes, Chrissy Teigen revealed to Access Hollywood that if offered, she would love to be the surrogate of Kim’s third child.

“I would be her surrogate in a second… I really enjoyed the pregnancy process — I loved it. Yes. In a heartbeat.”

For Teigen, the pregnancy process and birth of her daughter, Luna Simone, was enjoyable. However, Chrissy knows how difficult the road to motherhood can be, according to People.

“I did IVF — science is miraculous these days, anything is possible.”

The Lip Sync Battle host is a new mom herself. Teigen had her first child, who is now 7 months old, with John Legend.

“I hope whatever she does is gonna work out for the best, and it’s gonna be beautiful either way.”

Since she was robbed in Paris, Kim has been laying low, but Teigen has kept in touch. Chrissy told Us Weekly that she texted Kim after her traumatic robbery in Paris.

“We both live our lives like an open book… That’s why her fans love her. They love seeing the ins and outs of her life, their home, their relationship. We share all of that and don’t think that someone dangerous could see that and do something violent with that information. I share the inside of my home every day — so many parts of our lives we share. But she’s OK. Kim is OK and it could have been so much more horrific, so we’re happy that she’s OK.”
