Hilary Duff: ‘Racist’ Pilgrim And Native American Halloween Costumes Cause Controversy

Hilary Duff and Jason Walsh attended the Casmiagos Halloween Party in Beverly Hills on Friday. This was the first public appearance for the “Sparks” singer and her celebrity trainer boyfriend. During the red carpet event, their Halloween costumes garnered a ton of attention. At the Beverly Hills party, Jason wore a red and white feathered headdress complete with red face paint. Walsh stood next to Hilary, who dressed as a ‘sexy pilgrim’ in nude stockings, topped with a black fedora. The former Disney star accessorized with a weaved basket filled with corn, pumpkins, and other vegetables. The couple attended George Clooney, Rande Gerber, and Mike Meldman’s bash in Beverly Hills, according to ET! Online.

Many on Twitter were offended in light of the Dakota Access Pipeline protests. The standoff over the Dakota Access Pipeline is heating up. This week law enforcement raided a protest camp and arrested 141 people on Thursday. Protesters maintain the pipeline threatens water resources and will destroy sacred Native American sites. The Standing Rock Sioux Native American tribe is suing to stop the pipeline from crossing next to their reservation, according to USA TODAY.

The opponents of the pipeline began demonstrating in January. The Huffington Post reported the Native American leaders vowed on Saturday to protest through the winter against a North Dakota oil pipeline.

The sheriff’s office said another person was arrested on Friday, according to CNN, bringing the total number of arrests since August 10 to 411. The public took to Twitter to express their thoughts on Hilary and Walsh’s costume choice.

People magazine stated Native American themed costumes are usually considered a risky Halloween choice.

“Native American costumes are generally considered a risky Halloween choice as many people view it as an offensive appropriation of their culture.”

Hilary Duff wasn’t the only celeb involved in costume drama. Chris Hemsworth took to Instagram and apologized for wearing a Native American costume while attending a New Year’s Eve party.

“The pair have been spending a lot of time with each other in recent months, both in the gym and out at various restaurants to enjoy some fine dining, and it seems this budding romance began as a friendship.
