As of Thursday, the Star Wars fanbase has once again gone into a frenzy as the newest Rogue One trailer has arrived online. The trailer, which is the second of those released for the upcoming movie, features a better look at everyone's favorite villain. That's right, Darth Vader is featured a bit more prominently than in the earlier trailer. The online video also shows a batch of clues about what the new film might have in store with its various characters and stories.
According to E! Online in their report on Thursday, the second and final trailer for the new movie debuted on Good Morning America earlier. The new movie stars Felicity Jones, Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelssohn and Forest Whitaker among others. It is set before the original first Star Wars movie released back in the 1970s, Star Wars IV: A New Hope, and follows the attempts by the Rebels to steal plans for the Death Star weapon from the Empire. Jones' character has been displayed as the main protagonist in trailers so far, and in the latest trailer, more of the story that goes down is revealed. Keep in mind, there may be some spoilers ahead, but it's mostly speculation still.
Jones, who plays Jyn Erso, is seen having a flashback to when her father told her of his intentions to protect her. It appears that her father, played by Mads Mikkelsen, is captured by the Empire and forced to help construct the Death Star as their massive weapon. The Rebels want to prevent that nefarious plan, and of course, Jyn is central to them doing so since she can get to her father. First, they need to rescue her since she's been captured as well.
In addition to a pre-taped interview on GMA, Jones also appeared on BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show on Thursday. During her stop by the show, she talked about her excitement over the newest Star Wars movie.
"I've seen parts of it, and it's really cool, but I haven't seen it all yet. I'm anxiously and eagerly waiting to see it."The main villain of the movie is Director Krennic, played by Ben Mendelsohn. He's the one most in charge of overseeing the Death Star project. In his pre-taped interview on Good Morning America, he hinted at scenes with the other big baddie that everyone loves to hate.
"You will see me with people you know already, for sure."
Based on the trailer and Mendelsohn's comments that would appear to be Anakin Skywalker also known as Darth Vader. He's shown in several shots in the new trailer, including one of him moving towards Mendelsohn's character in a menacing scene. Based on a previous trailer showing a special tank in a room with red Imperial guards and someone in a black robe before that tank, there's still some fans wondering if there might be others in the film such as the Emperor. So far, no serious clues have dropped that he will be there, or that it is Supreme Leader Snoke from The Force Awakens.
As the Verge pointed out, the latest Rogue One trailer contains more clues than the previously-released teaser or trailer do. It really lays down what the story will be. Among the clues, are the fact that Jyn's dad is recruited by the Empire to do their dirty work and is away from his daughter for quite a long time. A later scene shows him sweating profusely almost as if he's being tortured or having issues getting work done for the bad guys. The speculation is also that Jyn gets in trouble, is captured by the Empire (or stormtroopers on another planet), and then broken out by Captain Andor (Diego Luna) and other rebels. There's a shot of someone in an Empire ground crew worker outfit that appears to be Jyn. Other clues in the new trailer suggest that the Rebels already have an idea of how destructive the Death Star might be and that overall this will be a sci-fi war film judging by the various scenes that are on display. There are different planets revealed including Scarf where the Death Star was said to be built. So what else is revealed in the newest clip? Viewers learn that the tall robot known as K-2SO can pilot a ship and that based on Baze Malbus' "How many do we need?" line this is also a bit of a heist film in which a group of various individuals is assembled to steal the Death Star plans together. There are shots of Stormtroopers, a different type of the AT-AT walkers, X-Wing fighters, Forest Whitaker's Saw Gerrera with robotic legs and more. The Gerrera reveal lines up with a Pop! Funko figure of the character that was revealed, and indicates he might share common traits with Darth Vader.
Viewers really need to watch the clip which runs over two minutes to see all the interesting scenes that weren't presented in the earlier teaser or trailer.Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will officially hit U.S. theaters on December 16, 2016. Star Wars fans, will the latest installment be as good, better than, or lesser than the 2015 release Star Wars: The Force Awakens?
