In reporting the news that Gary Glasberg has passed away, E! News reached out to the CBS network and reported on a statement released by network president Glenn Geller. That statement describes Glasberg’s passing as “an overwhelmingly sad day” for everyone connected with NCIS and CBS down to anyone who had personally met Glasberg. The NCIS showrunner is not just remembered as a highly creative talent and respected leader, but also as a warm and kindhearted friend to those who knew him.

Gary Glasberg left behind a wife, Mimi, and two sons, who were remembered in the CBS statement.

“We are devastated by the passing of our dear friend and colleague Gary Glasberg. He epitomized the word mensch and brought kindness, integrity and class to everything he did,” added David Stapf, president of CBS Television Studios. “His remarkable talent as a writer and producer was only matched by his ability to connect with people. Gary was a beloved member of our family and we are so honored that he called CBS his home for so many years. Our hearts go out to his wife, Mimi, two sons, his entire family and all those who loved him.”

At the time of his passing, Gary Glasberg was set to lead both NCIS and NCIS: New Orleans well into the future with a deal that would have had him running both shows well into 2019. As the Hollywood Reporter reveals, those under his command are now mourning the loss of a leader and a friend, as well as suffering the loss of his unique creative vision.

Cote de Pablo, who starred on NCIS from 2005 through 2013, has been among the first to comment on the passing of the NCIS showrunner. The actor stated that he is both saddened and shocked by the news, adding that he will never forget Glasberg’s big, infectious smile.

“#NCIS has lost an incredible man & leader, Gary Glasberg I’m grateful 4 ur trust & love, till we meet again. We’ll make you proud #RIP,” tweeted Wilmer Valderrama, who only recently joined NCIS as Special Agent Nick Torres.

Jon Cryer, who guest starred on NCIS in the recent 2015-2016 season, declared that he was stunned by the “horrible” news.

“Our hearts are collectively broken. Our #NCIS show runner and boss Gary Glasberg has passed away,” tweeted Pauley Perrette. “In shock and sadness. There are no words.”

Mr. Glasberg joined NCIS late in its run, coming to the show in 2009 and stepping up as showrunner in 2011. As a result of Glasberg’s guidance, NCIS has spent seven straight years as the most-watched broadcast drama with NCIS: New Orleans, also helmed by Gary, following closely behind as the third-most-watched broadcast drama.

It’s unknown at this early juncture how NCIS and NCIS: New Orleans will move forward without Gary Glasberg. Certainly, he will have to be replaced, but, depending on how CBS moves forward, the current season may be impacted on both series.

“Gary was our rock, our cheerleader, our team captain. He inspired us with his leadership, his creative instincts and keen insight. NCIS will not be the same without him, and each of us will miss his smiling face and unwavering humor, which lifted us every day,” reads a statement from the NCIS cast and crew.
