Gwen Stefani Speaks About Divorce, Says It Was ‘Months Of Torture,’ Hints Rossdale Troubles Were An Ongoing Theme In Her Music

There is “no doubt” that Gwen Stefani has been enjoying her newfound romance with country star Blake Shelton and has shared on a number of occasions just how much he supported her through her bitter divorce from her husband of 13 years, Gavin Rossdale.

Stefani has been open about the reason the marriage came to an end last year, noting that it had to do with infidelity on Gavin’s part with their former nanny. Gwen has also relayed how the devastation of divorce led her to create more hit music and reminded her that from challenge often comes change for the better.

In a recent interview, Gwen Stefani has reflected even more deeply upon the sheer torture she felt while going through the divorce from the Bush frontman. While chatting with Cosmopolitan for her upcoming September cover story, Stefani noted more on the pain she experienced in the proceedings that led to her marriage ending.

“Nobody except for my parents, the people involved, and whoever they told [know specifics].Nobody would believe it if I could really say what happened. I went through months and months of torture.”

The singer also subtly hinted at the fact that her music, over years, not just her current album, reveals that she was aware of her husband’s ways. When the publication asked if Stefani was aware of Rossdale’s behavior, she replied openly, relating her lyrics in her music to the truth behind the turmoil in their marriage.

“All you have to do is listen to every single song I’ve ever written and it’s all there. It’s an ongoing theme that I’ve had for a long time.”

Gwen then spoke about the vulnerability she felt in the beginning of her relationship with Blake, noting that both she and the country singer had trust issues following their respective split.

“We were both having trust issues, as you would if you were us. It was like, ‘I have so many problems. How can I now be getting into another potentially huge problem? What am I doing?'”

The “Hollaback Girl” singer states that it was this subject that became the inspiration behind the duet she and Shelton came up with together, “Go Ahead and Break My Heart.”

Stefani shares that the song came together naturally, and when Shelton sent the final track it was simply meant for her album, This is What the Truth Feels Like, which has a number of songs dedicated to Shelton as well as to her divorce from Rossdale.

Interestingly enough the romance between Gwen and Blake was predicted by media when the couple were co-judges on The Voice. Stefani notes how it was played up before she and Shelton even began their romance.

“We were laughing our heads off when we saw the blind auditions. I love NBC, but they for sure edited stuff to look like we were flirting, They chose to run with that story before anything was even real. I hardly knew him. But it was like it was in the air – happening before it happened.”

About the two possibly tying the knot in the near future, neither has commented. Yet, People shares words of a source who states that “Everyone is expecting an engagement.” An insider who is close to Gavin Rossdale states that the singer still remains close to his children and tries to be in their life as much as possible.

“He’s doing great and staying focused on music and the kids. When he’s not performing, Gavin spends his time with the kids. He knows the situation hasn’t been easy for them, and he’s with them as much as possible. They’re his life.”
