‘xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage’ Trailer Drops In, And Vin Diesel Is Back [Video]

xXx: The Return of Xander Cage has a new teaser trailer, and it looks like it could be even bigger than the previous films. Sadly, it also seems to be back to doing all of the things the first film did wrong.

Channeling Jimi Hendrix with “Voodoo Child,” the trailer does everything it can to ramp up anticipation for a character who is basically an extreme sports athlete looking for the ultimate rush. If this sounds familiar, Point Break did the same thing when Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves teamed up for a beach party. xXx: The Return of Xander Cage‘s trailer also shares something else with the classic film. There is surfing, although this is part of where suspension of disbelief begins to fall through.

Vin Diesel is seen riding a motorbike on a wave, something which is physically impossible, and that’s not the only thing which makes no sense in the real world.

The original xXx did something similar with a motorcycle as Vin Diesel ramp jumped off a random mound of dirt, leaned the bike through a barbed wire fence, and landed without a scratch. There was also an earlier stunt which famed skateboarder Tony Hawk admitted was impossible but approved anyway. After the restaurant scene, Vin takes a food tray and actually uses it to slide down a series of rails like a skateboard.

When Ice Cube took over for State of the Union, there wasn’t as much of an emphasis on impossible stunts. It was also considered a horrible sequel, so it seems Vin and the crew felt people wanted more of those stunts.

Another incredibly impossible stunt comes when xXx drops off a steel tower with a pair of skis into a forest and proceeds to speed through it, leaping through trees and everything. The xXx: The Return of Xander Cage trailer is just over a minute long and shows enough disregard for basic physics that fans of the original will probably eat it up.

Surprisingly, the trailer opens with Samuel L. Jackson telling someone not in the camera’s field of view that “they say the world is safer than it has ever been in the history of civilization. Do you feel safer today than you did yesterday? I know I don’t.”

After the logos play through the xXx: The Return of Xander Cage trailer, Jackson continues, “The world has changed. The war we’re fighting today needs a different kind of soldier. We need people with the skills and the attitude to take on the threats we don’t even know exist.”

Playing off the impossible stunt scenario, Toni Colette tells us that “we need someone who can walk into a tornado and come out the other side like it was a damned gentle breeze.”

There is also a scene where we see Xander Cage actually riding a skateboard and “wall-riding” on the side of a bus. One thing that skeptics will probably point out is how hard they’re trying to put extreme sports into what looks like a generic spy movie. The xXx: The Return of Xander Cage trailer has a lot of scenarios in it which could have been easier just traveling by some safer means, such as a surfboard in the above-mentioned wave riding. A motorbike would just drop into the water no matter how fast the wheels spin.

One thing the movie is really going to need to answer is the question of what really happened to Xander Cage after the second movie said he was dead. The xXx: The Return of Xander Cage trailer doesn’t offer any answers to this.
