Mexico Border Wall: Mexican President Says ‘No Way’ Mexico Will Pay For Trump’s Vision [Video]

Despite the bluster of Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican U.S. presidential nominee, the president of Mexico says there’s no way that his country is going to be paying for a border wall. The border wall has been a huge part of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign platform; he has focused largely on illegal immigration from Mexico and his plans to keep Mexican immigrants from getting easily to the U.S. He has also promised to deport millions of undocumented Mexican immigrants already here illegally, along with building a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico and (somehow) forcing Mexico to foot the bill.

In a recent interview with CNN, Enrique Peña Nieto (President of Mexico) told Fareed Zakaria that there was “no way” that his country will be paying for a border wall between Mexico and the United States.

According to President Peña Nieto, a good relationship between the U.S. and Mexico is the foundation of both social and economic prosperity of both nations.

“We also have to bear in mind that the security of the United States is linked with the security of its neighboring countries. And this is what we have built. And I’ll say it again, this is what we have been doing with the U.S. government. We have a relationship of coordination, of collaboration and of cooperation in the area of security, precisely in order to have security in Mexico, to have security in the U.S. and… we are journey companions. We are strategic partners working for security in North America. There is no way that Mexico can pay [for] a wall like that.”

The President of Mexico also had some words to say about Donald Trump’s characterization of Mexican citizens and those of Mexican descent (such as the American-born judge in the Trump University case). When Trump announced his foray into the American presidential race, he gave a speech indicating that people who come illegally to the U.S. from Mexico, they were criminals, druggies and rapists.

“I cannot agree with such a generalization for Mexicans. There is no way to agree with comments like these which describe all Mexicans in such a way.”

According to the President of Mexico, a border wall between the two nations will hurt commerce on both sides of the proposed wall. He says that Mexico and the U.S. are already “largely integrated” with each other, and that each and every day over one million people cross back and forth over the U.S./Mexico border legally.

Despite the vitriol spewed by Donald Trump and his ilk, a Pew Research Center poll has clearly demonstrated that the migration from Mexico to the United States along the U.S.’s southern border has slowed dramatically in the last decade.

In many cases, those illegally crossing the Mexican border into the U.S. have come from further south, from Central and South American nations, using Mexico as a land bridge.

The president of Mexico, while utterly and unequivocally rejecting the idea that his nation will be paying for a border wall between the United States and Mexico, did say that he wants to continue to build a good relationship between Mexico and the U.S. No matter who wins the contentious upcoming race for the White House.

“I believe that any of the candidates, Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Trump, I’m sure that both of them would like to build good conditions and better wellness for their people. We are very respectful to whomever is elected. We want to build a positive and constructive relation among Mexico and to whomever becomes president of United States.”

With the Democratic and Republican National Conventions coming up later this month, and both parties expected to officially announce their respective nominees, it’s very likely that Americans and Mexicans alike will be hearing much more about Trump’s proposed wall along the border with Mexico.
