Holly Holm Wants Rematch With Miesha Tate, Jon Jones Says Holly Will Have The Belt Again

Holly Holm, the former UFC bantamweight champion, lost her belt to Miesha Tate during UFC 196 on Saturday, March 5.

If you will recall, Holm took the belt from the former undefeated champ Ronda Rousey in November at UFC 193, and chose to ignore UFC president Dana White’s request that she wait for a rematch with Rousey to fight again. Wanting to stay active, Holly agreed to the fight with Tate, and was submitted during the fifth round of the co-main event.

According to Fox Sports, Dana White was persistent about Holly waiting for the biggest payday of her career during a rematch with Ronda, and is now pointing the finger at Holm’s management team for their poor decision making skills.

“The sad part about that whole thing is, and here’s the thing, he’s an old boxing guy who thinks he is smart and he is not,” White said about Holm’s manager Lenny Fresquez. “The thing that I feel bad about, I feel bad Holly because I don’t know if Holly really knows what she lost. I think that she has so much faith in the people that surround her, she feels like ‘well they got me here.’ Like we had this meeting and Holly wasn’t even in it. Holly that’s your life, you should be in that meeting. Don’t leave it to these people.”

“Listen — Holly made a lot of money, she made a lot of money, she accomplished great things, she beat Ronda Rousey,” White added. “But it could have been so much bigger for her and the sad part is I don’t even think she knows it.”

However, despite White’s claims, Fresquez insists Holm makes the final decision on all of her fights, and she has never been a fighter that focuses solely on making money. Rather than wanting to cash in on that big payday, Holly would rather stay active and take on other contenders, which is why she agreed to the fight with Miesha Tate. As for now, Fresquez said they are waiting to see what the UFC offers in regards to her next fight.

“That’s what Holly wants. We’re champing at the bit waiting for a phone call to see if that’s what we’re going to do,” Frequez said. “Because Holly right now, I had a discussion with her, if they put a contract in front of us right now to wait for Ronda (Rousey) or to fight Miesha and you know the dollar difference, who would you take? ‘She goes, ‘I’ll fight Miesha.'”

UFC fighter Jon Jones has been one of Holly Holm’s closest friends and mentors for years, and he has watched her grow into the fighter she is today. Even though Holly lost her belt to Tate, Jones insists she will hold it again one day.

“I’m not worried about Holly too much. I know for a fact that her best is yet to come. It really is. She will hold the belt again,” Jones told FOX Sports. “No doubt in my mind.”

“Holly’s an amazing champion. She’s an amazing person, an amazing citizen. She will be back from this so much stronger. Holly, she’s a rookie in this sport and with that being said, she’s one of the greatest of all time already. So her potential is just sky high. I mean there’s no cap on her potential,” he said, adding that one of her most important traits is her dedication to the sport, and refusing to let herself stop learning and growing as a fighter.
