NFL rumors have surrounded Prince Amukamara. The New York Giants handed $62.5 million to Janoris Jenkins of the Los Angeles Rams. Sensing that the Giants were ready to move on because of his injury-prone history, Amakamura scheduled himself a visit with the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team with a ton of salary cap space. According to NBC Sports, Amakamura and the Jaguars have agreed to terms on a one-year deal.
Prince Amukamara did not want to waste time in free agency. He wanted to find a new home in the NFL and start focusing on next season. That’s one of the biggest reasons why Amukamara was so quick to sign a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. They were the only team that he visited, and he signed on the same day that he made the visit. Amukamara clearly does not like the process of shopping himself around.
Since the Jacksonville Jaguars don’t have a ton of depth at the cornerback position, Prince Amukamara has a very good chance to start the regular season as a starter. He should be able to beat out Davon House, Dwayne Gratz, and Aaron Colvin. Depending on how much Demetrius McCray improves over the offseason, Amukamara may even find himself as the top cornerback for the Jaguars, going up against the top wide receivers in the NFL.
When it comes to pure talent, Prince Amukamara is in the top half of the NFL at the cornerback position. He came into the league with the potential to be a lockdown cornerback like Patrick Peterson, Richard Sherman, and Josh Norman. Amakamura just never reached that level because his body kept giving out on him. That’s the reason why the Jacksonville Jaguars were only willing to give him a one-year contract.
Nowadays, it’s pretty rare to see players wanting to play for the Jacksonville Jaguars, especially those as talented as Prince Amukamara. They haven’t had a winning season or been to the NFL Playoffs since 2007. Free agents like Prince Amukamara and Tashaun Gipson are hoping to end that drought. The Tennessee Titans added DeMarco Murray and Rishard Matthews. The Houston Texans acquired Brock Osweiler and Lamar Miller. Winning the AFC South will not be an easy task for Amukamara, Gipson, and the Jaguars.
