Gwen Stefani Confirms ‘Make Me Love You’ Is About Blake Shelton

Gwen Stefani is confirming one of music’s worst kept secrets – her new single “Make Me Love You” is about her boyfriend Blake Shelton.

Stefani made the not-so-secret announcement during her latest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on February 16, where Gwen broke her streak of keeping mum when it comes to her increasingly serious relationship with her Voice co-star.

Stefani made the big Blake Shelton admission when Kimmel playfully quizzed the singer on why she featured a neon sign that read “Blake’s” in her big Grammy performance of the song the night prior.

“You had a neon sign that said ‘Blakes,'” the late night talk show host said to Gwen on the show, joking, “Now was that for Blake Lively? Or Blake Griffin?… or perhaps, I don’t know, maybe another?”

“Yeah, I don’t know, that was just a coincidence,” Gwen Stefani coyly replied. “I don’t know why they put that [there], that was weird.”

Stefani then came clean about the song and her Blake romance, eventually confessing, “It is, actually,” when Jimmy Kimmel bluntly inquired, “The song is about Blake Shelton?” on the popular ABC talk show.

I will admit that that song is about that guy, yeah,” Gwen added.

Stefani then got candid about her divorce from Gavin Rossdale in the interview, which Gwen described as a “tragedy,” before appearing to refer to her blossoming romance with Shelton as “something beautiful.”

“What’s so crazy is that sometimes tragedy, if you really absorb it, you can turn it into something beautiful,” Gwen told Kimmel, “and this whole album is about trying to take something that’s awful and healing from it.”

Blake Shelton previously alluded to “Make Me Love You” being about his and Gwen Stefani’s new-found romance on social media after he took to Twitter to persuade his almost 16 million followers to download Gwen’s new song.

“You can probably understand the multiple reasons why I just bought this,” Blake wrote on the 140-character site on February 12, before adding, “I hope you do to!!! @gwenstefani.”

Shelton also appeared pretty flattered by Stefani’s “Blake’s” sign just two days later in a photo posted by marketing director Mary Ellen Duggan.

Duggan posted a shot of Blake posing with the neon sign on her official Instagram page, writing, “Look who walked away with one of our props. Thanks for being a part of the video @blakeshelton @gwenstefani.”

It likely comes as no surprise to those who’ve listened to Gwen Stefani’s newest track that the song is about her increasingly serious relationship with Blake Shelton, as the personal lyrics of Gwen’s latest single are pretty telling.

According to E! News, Stefani sings, “I was fine before I met you / I was broken but fine / I was lost and uncertain / But my heart was still mine / I was free before I met you / I was broken but free / All alone in the clear view / But now you are all I see / Hey, wait a minute / No, you can’t do this to me / Hey, wait a minute / No, that’s not fair / Hey, wait a minute / You’re running back to me / I really like you, but I’m so scared / Why’d you have to go and make me like you? / Yeah this is a feeling I’m not used to / Why’d you have to go and make me like you? I’m so mad at you ’cause now you got me missing you.”
