English football’s Capital One Cup has come down to one last match before the Wembley Stadium final, and when Manchester City hosts Everton Wednesday, fans can watch the game streaming live online as the Sky Blues look to overcome a 2-1 deficit after losing away to the Toffees at Goodison Park on January 6.
Traditionally known as the League Cup, the Capital One Cup is generally considered the third-most coveted football honor in England, after the Premier League championship and the venerable FA Cup. But for a team like Everton, who have not won a trophy of any kind since 1987 when they captured the league championship in what was then known as the First Division, the Capital One Cup is as valuable as any silverware.
Manchester City has won the League Cup three times, most recently just two seasons ago. Everton has never won the League Cup, despite playing in five semifinals and two finals. City Manager Manuel Pellegrini is acutely aware of that fact, and admitted Tuesday that the Everton players may, indeed, come into the watch simply wanting the victory more than his own squad.
“Maybe Everton haven’t been in a final for many years and they will be motivated but our team will do all they can to get there too,” Pellegrini told the BBC. “The most important thing is to try to play another final at Wembley. That is our target. After we lost to Everton 2-1, I said that if we don’t qualify for the final, it’s not because of that game but because we can’t win at home at least 1-0.”
A 1-0 victory sends Manchester City to the final thanks to the away goals rule. Whoever wins will take on Liverpool at Wembley on February 28, after the Reds defeated Stoke City in their semifinal on penalty kicks Tuesday.

Manchester City have never lost at home to Everton in either the League Cup, or the FA Cup. But City have also overcome a first-leg semifinal deficit only one time — in 1976.
Everton striker Romelu Lukaku has played in five League Cup games this season, and scored in four of them. The Toffees need just one goal to put Mancherter City in a very tough position. In that case, City would need to win by at least two goals to avoid overtime and a potential penalty kick shootout.
