Scott Walker Disagrees With Romney About Teachers, Cops and Firefighters [Op-Ed]

There seems to be a bit of a disagreement between Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and Presumptive republican nominee Mitt Romney over the meaning of the recall win the governor achieved last week. Mitt Romney thinks it shows clearly that the people do not think it is time to hire more teachers, cops and firefighters. Walker disagrees.

The real issue facing the country, and Mitt Romney seems completely oblivious too, is not that people want more or less government. People want the government to start acting like adults and work on the problems we all are facing.

Some States clearly need more teachers, firefighters and cops. They should have them. Our education system and public safety should not suffer because there are some among us who think anything the government does is evil. That being said, the government is not going to be able to keep hiring more teachers, cops and firefighters just to help us get out of this economic slump either.

Mitt Romney told Bob Schieffer on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”,

“I think, in the end, the big issue is that the private sector still needs more help. The answer’s not more big government. I know in my state, our reforms allowed us to protect firefighters, police officers and teachers. That’s not what I think of when I think of big government.”

So which is it Mitt? Does the Private sector need more help? If it does who do propose help them? Ohh I see the Government which you are fighting like crazy to run and can’t give credit for anything should help the private sector now?

The whole point of a vibrant private sector is it should function as independently from the government as possible. In order to thrive it has to be left to do what it does, and the government has to oversee the pressure points to make sure that the private sector actually stays fair.

Romney went after Obama this week saying,

“He says we need more firemen, more policemen, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.”

Yet again do teachers, firefighters and cops not help the American People?

The general Romney solution is give most of the treasury to the rich and to the private sector because in the end they will create jobs to promote commerce on a people, that under Romney’s plans, will not be able to afford to engage in commerce any more.

Walker understood that his survival of the recall vote came because he is a visionary, and he has a plan for bringing Wisconsin out of red. Romney is trying to capitalize on that. It is not going to help him if he doesn’t really listen to the message the voters were sending. Action not Rhetoric will win the day.
