‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Trailer: 5 Things I’d Love To See (Opinion)

We are just two months away from something that a few years ago no one would have imagined possible: An actual Star Wars sequel!

But you know what’s annoying me about the whole Star Wars: The Force Awakens promo? The fact that we really don’t know much. Take that with a grain of salt as I’m pretty much the version of 5-year-old on Christmas Eve, crying, “Why can’t I open my presents now?”

I understand that director J.J. Abrams wishes to keep as tight a lid on this movie as possible. I also realize that keeping everyone in suspense about The Force Awakens will ensure that a record-breaking amount of people go to see the movie when it opens on December 18. Yet, there are still some things that haven’t been properly showcased at this stage. I mean they’re calling this the FINAL trailer and technically the other two were glorified teasers. Star Wars fans being teased with limited footage and now we’re getting one last trailer? How will we stay sane until December?!
Our only hope is if this trailer, which is set to air on ESPN during “Monday Night Football” shows some real goodies — leaves us with a few things to chew over for the several weeks ahead.

Here are five things that I personally would like to see in this trailer.

First and foremost, I want actual proof that newcomer Finn is going to be a force-sensitive individual (a Jedi). You’d think having him wielding a lightsaber on film and on multiple movie posters would be enough of a clue. Some people are being really obtuse about his ability, allegiance, and importance. Having Finn use the Force to move something would settle question and shut more than a few naysayers up.

Second, I want to see Rey do more than look puzzled or run from things. We’ve been given indications that Rey is an absolute bad-ass. I would love to see at least a hint of this. Now, I wouldn’t be angry if she manages to do this without the Force. Her weapon isn’t a lightsaber, but it is interesting. Hopefully, we get to see her wield it.

Third, I want BB-8 and R2-D2 interaction; R2-D2 is a long-time droid favorite and BB-8 is an instant sensation. I’d love to know that these two meet at some point. We got them together on stage during the Star Wars Celebration. Maybe there will be some kind of repeat, and we can see it in the Force Awakens trailer.

Fourth, I think we need to see “the power” of the dark side aka the baddies. We’ve seen them look menacing and stand in long rows on an icy planet…but there’s never been much of a hint of what’s actually at stake in this sequel. We know the bad guys are bad because of previous Star Wars movie villains. What is the new threat “The First Order” brings to the table?

Lastly…I demand to see Luke Skywalker. Not just his robot hand coming out from beneath his Obi-Wan Kenobi-esque cloak. I demand older, jaded Skywalker. Doesn’t matter if he’s good or if he’s evil (as some have theorized). Aside from a dated voice-over and barely a glimpse in a recent teaser, we’ve not seen anything of the Jedi Master. The only person nearly as scarce in promo is Princess Leia, and at least she (and her interesting new hair-do…) made it onto the official poster. Give us, Luke already!

I realize these are asking for a lot, but it’s just a reflection of what I said — I feel like I don’t know anything about Star Wars: The Force Awakens and I desperately want to know more. I’m sure you have your own list of things you desperately want to see in the trailer, and certainly in the movie itself.

What do you hope to get a glimpse of in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer? What do you want to see in the Star Wars sequel itself? Share your thoughts below!
