What should have been an exciting time for former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton was met with some harsh questions as she attended a book signing event at Book People in Austin, Texas, on Friday. The 35-year-old attended the event to promote her new book when an activist questioned the paternity of her father, Bill Clinton.
The Daily Caller reports that right wing activist and blogger Robert Morrow questioned Clinton about who her real father is while she signed a copy of her book, It’s Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going. Morrow suggested that former Arkansas lawyer Webster Lee Hubbell was Chelsea’s real father, and indicated that her mother Hillary may have kept it a secret from her.
“Has your mother ever told you that you’re the daughter of Webb Hubbell, and not Bill Clinton?”
The new author handled the question and claimed to be proud of both of her parents.
“I am proud to be my parents’ daughter.”
Not quite satisfied with her response, Morrow pressed on, asking Chelsea what she thought of Bill Clinton’s alleged inappropriate targeting of younger girls. Chelsea, however, steered the conversation back towards the book, indicating that accusations against her father had no place at the book signing.
“I would say my book is really resonating with kids. I was at the Ann Richards School earlier today and I’m so grateful that it’s resonating to the young girls and the young boys that I’ve been talking to across the country.”
This isn’t the first time Chelsea has dealt with claims that her real father is Hubbell. In fact, the rumor of Hillary Clinton’s alleged affair with Hubbell has been floating around since at least 1984, during Bill Clinton’s second term as Arkansas governor. The Political Insider reports that Larry Nichols, a former aide to Bill Clinton, touched on the subject in previous years, stating that former president told him that he was infertile.
“His exact words were, ‘I shoot blanks.’ Stunned by what I’d just heard, I asked him, ‘Then what about Chelsea?’ And he said, ‘Oh, Webb (Hubbell) sired her.'”
Nichols also said that despite evidence, Chelsea was more than likely in denial, and that it’s disheartening that she has nothing to do with her real father.
“It’s unfortunate, sad really, that Chelsea has no real relationship with Hubbell – who I believe to be her real biological father – when he’s alive and kicking and living in North Carolina. But it could be she’s in denial, despite overwhelming proof that Webb is her real dad.”
Regardless, Chelsea considers her parents to be Bill and Hillary Clinton, and neither have ever confirmed the rumors to be true. Many people feel that the allegations are false and simply a way to throw shade at Hillary’s character while she remains a Democratic presidential candidate.
Meanwhile, Chelsea continues on with her book signing tour. On Tuesday, she flew into New Orleans, where she spoke to children at the Lusher Charter School, urging them to think globally, the main message of her new book. While the kids were excited to hear about her political aspirations, Chelsea encouraged them to think about their goals, whatever they may be. When an inquiring student asked Chelsea if she ever planned to run for office, the author told the young student that children should think about what they want out of their own futures.
“I don’t think it’s something that should just be asked of me, because of what choices my parents have made. … I think it’s a question you should be asking yourselves.”
