Stephen DeKnight Says The ‘Daredevil’ Punisher Will Be So Marvel, Is The Fourth Time The Charm?

The Punisher has one of roughest histories of all Marvel comic to feature film characters. Dolph Lundgren played thhe Punisher in the ’80s, Thomas Jane played the Punisher in 2004, and lastly some guy that no one has ever heard of played him a few years later. Not one of them was considered a commercial success for Marvel’s The Punisher. However, according to Comicbook, departing Daredevil showrunner says that four times a charm, and that Jon Berthnal’s Punisher will be the most Marvel yet.

“The thing about The Punisher, and I think there are great things about each of those versions, but none of them was completely the Marvel version. And none of those movies were under the Marvel Studios banner until they recently got The Punisher back. So this is really the first time that we’re seeing the Marvel Studios from the Iron Man days, when they can control their own product, actually do this character.”

Though DeKnight kept emphasizing the idea that the Punisher will be so Marvel, which those who know the Punisher know how violent he is, he did suggest it would be “PG-16” and unlikely to don an R rating.

“The first season of Daredevil was violent, but I always say it was more implied. It wasn’t nearly as violent as The Walking Dead, a show that I love. On that, if somebody were to crush somebody’s head in a car door, you would’ve seen the head crush on screen but we didn’t want to go quite that far. We wanted to keep it right around PG-16 and not go all the way to the R. “I have no idea if they’re planning to push it that far next season but I would be surprised.”

Slashfilm reports that an exceptionally violent Punisher is apparently out, or at least to the best of DeKnight’s knowledge of Marvel’s plans. Marvel’s the Punisher is one of Stephen DeKnight’s favorite characters, so his departure saddens hims, but he feels the Punisher was left in good hands for Daredevil season 2.

“Punisher is one of my favorite characters. I’ve talked to Jeph Loeb ever since I first met him back on Buffy about doing The Punisher. So it was a heartbreak to me to have to leave, but I knew it was in good hands and I loved everything we had started talking about Frank Castle being in that story.”

There you have it Punisher fans. Get ready for the most Marvel Punisher yet, or will it be? The Punisher’s fans will have to wait until next year to find out if he is or not. According to the Inquisitr, Marvel’s fully Marvel Punisher Jon Bernthal is a spokesperson for pit bulls. Perhaps, The Punisher will have a pooch in Daredevil’s second season, and maybe even the Punisher’s own series.
