Calvin “Megatron” Johnson Wins ‘Madden NFL 13’ Cover

Detroit Lions wideout Calvin “Megatron” Johnson has won the coveted cover for Madden NFL 13.

Johnson was competing against second-year Panthers quarterback Cam Newton for the honory. Megatron managed to pull in 52 percent of the total from more than 651,000 votes.

The big reveal was made during an airing of ESPN2’s SportsNation. After the reveal Johnson said of the honor:

“Man, it’s great. Just to see yourself on this Madden (cover) and seeing all the guys that have been on Madden? C’mon, man.”

While winning the Madden cover is considered a huge honor it has also come with the “Madden curse” as players elected to its cover are often met with less than stellar seasons during the year of their covers release. The perfect example is last years winner Peyton Hillis who rushed for just 587 yards last season after winning the Madden NFL 12 cover.

In the meantime Calvin Johnson just signed a massive eight-year contract worth $132 million, that contract arrived after he came off a season in which he caught 96 passes for a league-best 1,681 yards and 16 touchdowns. The only other two players to catch at least 95 receptions, at least 1,600 yards and at least 15 touchdowns in a single season are Jerry Rice and Randy Moss.

Beating out Cam Newton wasn’t an easy task, Cam was picked No. 1 overall during the 2011 NFL draft and he managed to rush for 14 touchdowns, a record for an NFL quarterback. Cam Newton was also the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for more than 4,000 yards while rushing for more than 500 additional.
