WWE News: Ryback Suffers Injury, Will Not Wrestle At ‘WWE Battleground’

Current Intercontinental champion Ryback has reportedly suffered an injury and will not be competing at this Sunday’s WWE Battleground event, according to WWE.com.

The report states that Ryback suffered an injury to his right knee this past week on Monday Night RAW. There is no specific information as to what type of injury he suffered but it is obviously serious enough to prevent him from wrestling this weekend.

Prior to the announcement, Ryback was scheduled to defend his Intercontinental championship against The Miz and The Big Show. However, that match is obviously scrapped and the future of both Ryback and the championship is up in the air.

An injury is one of the last things that any WWE superstar wants to suffer, no less an injury that prevents them from defending their title at a pay-per-view. For Ryback, this is far from his first encounter with injuries.

At the beginning of WWE career, Ryback, then known as Skip Sheffield, suffered a broken leg in 2010. The injury was severe enough to require surgery on two separate occasions. Actually, Ryback discussed his near career-ending injury with Sam Roberts two years ago, describing it as one of the hardest obstacles of his career.

Despite the setbacks, Ryback eventually returned to WWE television the week after Wrestlemania 29 under his current name. He quickly ascended the WWE ladder and gained popularity for both his imposing physique and intensity.

After his return and subsequent rise to stardom, Ryback was able to remain relatively healthy as the leg injury appeared to be a distant memory. But in August of 2014, the injury bug bit Ryback again, as he underwent hernia surgery. That injury was far less debilitating but still cost him two months of in-ring time.

He would return in late October as a fan-favorite, quickly re-establishing himself after floundering in a tag team with Curtis Axel and not being featured as prominently. It all culminated at Elimination Chamber this year, as Ryback was able to outlast five other superstars and capture the vacant Intercontinental championship.

It was the first time that Ryback held any sort of championship gold as a WWE superstar.

However, if his injury proves to be serious, Ryback could face the same fate as the previous holder of the Intercontinental championship, Daniel Bryan. Bryan was forced to vacate the title after winning the title at Wrestlemania 31.

Stay tuned for updates and we will pass them along once they are available.
