It’s been a rough year for Roman Reigns in terms of his push to the top of WWE. Every single week Reigns gets a different response from the crowd, however, he hasn’t been viciously booed since WrestleMania weekend. There’s no question that WWE wants him to be the top guy in the company for the next decade or so, but, due to the fans’ reaction, they’ve had a hard time putting him in that spot.
This past Monday on RAW, Brock Lesnar was revealed as Seth Rollins’ opponent at WWE Battleground. Rollins — who unexpectedly cashed in his Money in the Bank contract during the Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar match at WrestleMania, and walked out as the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion — could very well lose his WWE title to Brock Lesnar, which — according to the Wrestling Observer— could set up a WrestleMania 31 rematch between Lesnar and Reigns, where WWE will finally have Reigns take down Lesnar, and win his first WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
There is a feeling that if WWE decides to put the title on Reigns at SummerSlam, that it’ll be too soon, and that the fans will resent Reigns more than ever, especially since he’ll be winning it by defeating the most popular star that WWE has in Brock Lesnar. But, with Seth Rollins likely facing Triple H at SummerSlam, both Reigns and Lesnar will be free to face each other, which could mean that Reigns will be getting a WWE title match.
Another scenario that WWE is considering is having Sheamus cash-in his Money in the Bank contract at WWE Battleground during the Rollins vs. Lesnar match — copying what Rollins did at WrestleMania— and making it a triple-threat match, with the idea of Rollins pinning Sheamus, so that WWE can avoid putting the title back on Lesnar, and they can avoid pinning Lesnar as well.
The feeling within WWE is that the next time Reigns is in a WWE World Heavyweight Championship match, he’ll win it, because WWE doesn’t want to have him fail to win the “big one” too many times. So, if Reigns is in the ring with Lesnar for the WWE Title at SummerSlam, that could very well mean that Reigns will be walking out as the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion, which would likely make him the most hated man in WWE.
