Charlize Theron, Sean Penn Split: She Reportedly Called It Off

Actress Charlize Theron is reportedly back on the market!

Us Weekly reports that the 39-year-old actress broke up with actor Sean Penn, bringing their high-profile romance and engagement to an end.

According to the report, it was actually Charlize that made the call to end their relationship after their recent trip to the Cannes Film Festival in southern France.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Charlize and Sean decided to take their relationship to the next level last December when they got engaged secretly during a romantic trip to Paris. Further reports even claimed that Sean Penn was working on legally adopting Charlize’s son, Jackson Theron, as his own.

Even though there was apparently not an elaborate proposal or ring, inside sources told Us Weekly that Charlize and Sean were still very committed to one another and their relationship.

After spending nearly two decades as close friends. Charlize Theron admitted in an interview with Vogue magazine for its June 2014 issue that their blossoming relationship happened naturally.

“Sean and I have known each other for 18 years. We were just really good friends. And it’s been slow going because you are aware that you could screw that up and lose it… At the end of the day, it was somewhat effortless. It just kind of naturally happened, and before I knew it, I was in something that was making my life better – the people who really love me can see the effect it has had on me.”

Charlize Theron has never been married before. Therefore, her marriage to Sean Penn would have been her very first trip down the aisle to marriage. Charlize was previously in a long-term relationship with actor Stuart Townsend from 2001 to 2010.

On the other hand, marrying Charlize would have been Sean’s third trip down the aisle. His first marriage was to singer Madonna and his second to House of Cards actress Robin Wright.

The actor discussed his engagement and marriage plans in a March interview with Esquire UK, claiming that he actually didn’t view it as a third marriage at all.

“I wouldn’t even consider it a third marriage, I’d consider it a first marriage on its own terms if I got married again. I mean, I like the tradition. A friend of mine wrote a line, ‘Without tradition, new things die.’ And I don’t want new things to die.”

When discussing his past marriages, Sean Penn also stated that he was married under circumstances where he was less informed than he is now.

Neither Charlize Theron nor Sean Penn has made a public statement about their current relationship status as of yet.
