8-Year-Old Utah Boy Takes 5-Year-Old Sister On Joyride, Crashes Into Trees

An 8-year-old boy in Utah wrecked his family’s car this week when he attempted to drive himself and his 5-year-old sister to the store for a late night trip.

While he may be very young the boy was smart enough to make sure he bucked up and that his sister was also buckled in before he started the family minivan, drove out of the driveway, passed through two lanes of traffic and then smashed into several trees.

A police spokesman told the Salt Lake Tribune:

“They had just come out of the driveway, went across both lanes, then hit those trees … It could have been much worse if they didn’t have their seatbelts on. They were just too smart for their own good.”

A neighbor who witnessed the entire scene revealed:

“This kid wasn’t even tall enough to see above the steering wheel … They were worried their mother was going to be mad at them.”

In the police report the boy said his mother was sleeping when he grabbed the vans keys and decided to head off to the store.

Police took the children home and woke up their mother to tell her about the incident. Upon a quick investigation the children were returned to their mother as there didn’t appear to be any neglect on the part of the mom, although we’re sure she’ll be hiding her car keys better in the future.

Are you worried that your own children might try a similar stunt one day? Perhaps keys should be put out of the reach of little ones hands when not in use.
