Billy Corgan Joins TNA Wrestling Creative Team, Outlines Ambitious Plan To Change Sports Entertainment

Billy Corgan has replaced the Smashing Pumpkins for smashing brutes after he confirmed that he’s joined the creative team at TNA Wrestling.

The singer and guitarist doesn’t want to just join the masses and produce the same old material though, because Corgan, who was the lead singer and guitarist of the rock outfit, wants to give the medium a complete overhaul, and he has lofty ambitions for how he might explore the likes of gender, ethnicity, and race within the confines of the ring.

Corgan’s official title at TNA Impact Wrestling is senior producer of creative and talent development, and he explained that he wants to take the company in “really fresh, new directions. ”

But how does the musician plan on doing this? Well, during his discussion with Variety, he revealed that he wants to explore race, sex, gender and transgender themes and stories, which he believes will move the sport and medium into a whole new era.

“There is a tremendous opportunity to go into really fresh, new directions. There are ways to explore those themes in ways that are productive, create new stars and show that value-based ‘babyfaces,’ no matter what their background, no matter where they come from, can draw new audiences and inspire people in new ways.”

Corgan predicts that his work will “break new ground” and believes that there exploration of “social and cultural issues” will resonate with modern audiences, and he plans to create “revelatory and enlightening” stories for them to view.

Corgan will be working alongside the likes of Jeff Hardy, Kurt Angle, and Bobby Roode at TNA Wrestling, and TNA’s president Dixie Carter believes that Corgan’s proposed stance is integral to making the corporations stand out amongst the likes the of World Wrestling Entertainment and various overseas wrestling factions.

“We need to make our existing characters have a greater depth to them,” Carter explained. “We want the stories to have a depth and a meaning to someone that is relevant today. Billy can really help that.”

Corgan is a devout and impassioned wrestling fan. He previously explained that he watched the sport throughout his youth and then into the 1980s. In fact, he has even run a small wrestling promotion in Chicago over the last few years while he has built up a friendship with Carter, who bonded over their mutual love of the sport.

Billy Corgan’s work on TNA Wrestling is due to start hitting screens around the start of early May.
