Woman Talks To Cat In Cat Language With Translator App — But What Did She Say To Get This Reaction?

Any pet owner can relate to this video, which is going viral this week, because everyone who loves a pet tries constantly to talk to the animals, but whether anything humans say can actually be understood by a cat or a dog is anyone’s guess.

Enter the human-to-cat translator app. Cat lovers can actually download this app to their smartphones. Now, according to the description of one such “translation” app, “This app is intended for entertainment purposes only and does not provide true Human-to-Cat Translating functionality.”

But that never stopped a devoted cat owner from trying — because sometimes wanting to believe is as good as believing. And as this video makes clear, the translation app is saying — something.

In fact, as the human in this video, Penny Adams, says, “Who knows what the app was really saying in cat voice, but he sure didn’t like it.”

As you’ll see in the video, the app seems to be delivering some serious smack talk to the kitty, whose name is Flam, because after staring up at Penny in disbelief, as if to say, “What did you just call me?” Flam lets her have it.

The app must have unleashed some serious fighting words.

“It worked, but it also got an unusual reaction from Flam, who proceeded to walk up slowly and pop me in the head,” said Penny, who is a professional photographer and part-time volunteer at The Cat Shoppe in Nashville, Tennessee. “We laughed so hard.”

In addition to selling cat supplies, The Cat Shoppe also runs a non-profit cat rescue operation.

In reality, cat behavior experts say that kitties do, actually, have a language, and a rather complex one at that, consisting not only of numerous, distinct meows, but also of equally important body language, including tail movements, facial expressions, body positions, and ear-wagging.

Scents also play a vital role in cat communication. No app, at least one made so far, can act as a real translator for every nuance of cat language.

And, of course, purring is also an important way that cats communicate their feelings and thoughts.

It’s also worth noting that vocal communication between cats is virtually non-existent. Cats save their meows for talking to humans, and they learn which type of meows get specific responses for their human companions.

In other words, the lesson is, if you want to talk to your cat, you’re better off observing your feline friend closely and remembering how the kitty responds to certain words, sounds, and gestures. A translator app, as this viral video proves, can get you in big trouble.
