6-Year-Old Bronx Boy Killed When Accidentally Given Methadone

Sad story to report out of the Bronx where a 6-year-old boy died on Monday after he dad gave him what he though was DayQuil. It turns out the boys mother had been storing methadone in the medicine bottle.

According to his father little Carlos Rio Jr. wasn’t feel well on Saturday when his dad gave him a half tablespoon of liquid from a bottle marked as DayQuil, however the boys mother Raquel DeLeon had placed her methadone supply in the bottle with no warnings written on the container.

After being given the drug the little boy was rushed from his E. 147th St. apartment to Lincoln Hospital and then transferred to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.

DeLeon was arrested after the incident and has already been arrested on two other drug arrests. DeLeon was charged with reckless endangerment. She told police that she had a prescription for methadone but she wasn’t clear as to why the medicine was stored inside a cold-medicine bottle.

Do you think the 6-year-old boys mother should be charged with the death of her child based on her irresponsible actions in storing the potentially deadly methadone prescription she had received while failing to tell the boys father about what was inside the bottle?
