The Walking Dead star Lauren Cohan has been cast as the lead in another horror project, but the threat she'll have to deal with in The Boy is far creepier than the hordes of zombies that haunt Maggie Greene's nightmares.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Lauren Cohan's new horror movie is about a nanny (Cohan) who is given a very bizarre job by her employers -- she's tasked with caring for a lifelike doll. The doll is the property of a couple who treat it like it's a real child, and they use their pretend parenting as a coping mechanism to deal with the death of their son. Things take a turn for the freaky when Cohan's nanny character becomes convinced that the doll is actually alive.
The Washington Post reports that another doll-centric horror movie, New Line Cinema's Annabelle, also got a considerable amount of social media buzz despite its low budget and cast of unknowns. Unfortunately, Lauren Cohen's movie isn't claiming to be based on a true story like Annabelle did, and that true story boast probably helped the film draw in curious moviegoers.
The Boy could always claim that it's inspired by the numerous women who are obsessed with those creepy, super-realistic Reborn dolls. The mom in the video below can't get enough of the fake babies.
The Boy is being produced by Lakeshore Entertainment and Vertigo Entertainment, and it will be directed by William Brent Bell (The Devil Inside). Filming will likely start in March, so Walking Dead fans shouldn't worry too much about Maggie Greene's future on the show. According to Wetpaint, filming for each season of The Walking Dead doesn't usually start until May, so this should give Lauren plenty of time to squeeze in a quickie horror movie. In other words, Cohan's casting doesn't mean that her character was killed off during the second half of Season 5.
The Hollywood Reporter points out why Lauren Cohan's new job is a really big deal -- very few of her Walking Dead costars have managed to score lead roles in movies. The Walking Dead might be one of the most popular series on TV, but small screen success isn't translating into juicy movie roles for its cast.
Lauren actually isn't the only female Walking Dead star to nab a part in a horror flick. According to Den of Geek, Lorie Grimes actress Sarah Wayne Callies stars in an upcoming scary movie titled The Other Side of the Door, and it's also about a dead child. Callies plays a mother who must protect her living family members from the spirit of her deceased son. The movie doesn't have a release date yet, but it will probably come out sometime this year. It seems like a candidate for a VOD release while Lauren Cohan's horror flick will likely get a theatrical release.
