4 Reasons The Galaxy S5 Is Still Worth Buying

With rumors about the Galaxy S6 increasing every day, it may seem like a horrible time to opt for the S5. After all, the S5 is now nine months old, and Samsung historically includes upgrades with the launch of each new phone. So if you’re in the market for a new phone, you should sit tight and wait for the Galaxy S6 to launch before taking the plunge, right?

Maybe not.

There are a number of reasons to buy last year’s cell phone.

Pricing

While the Galaxy S5 costs $200 under contract from most carriers, according to Gotta Be Mobile, deals at retailers like Amazon or Best Buy often offer the phone for $50.

Features The S5 is a great cellphone, with nine months of stability to show for itself. One of the concerns of buying a device on launch weekend, even with a stable company like Samsung, is that even solid stable companies sometimes create duds. The Galaxy S5 is well reviewed and generally considered to have a great display. The S5 lives up to its claim of being water resistant for up to 30 minutes in three feet of water, and there are still a lot of accessories and add-ons available for the phone.

OS

Samsung has a good history of supporting its devices through at least a few forthcoming iterations of its Galaxy phones. The S5 is confirmed to receive the Lollipop update to the Android system, according to Android Geeks, and history says that the phone will probably get at least the next update as well. With a two year contract, it is possible that your OS might be out of date at the tail end of that time frame, but you would likely be updated right up until the end.

Customer Satisfaction

Much has been made of the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) survey that showed Samsung getting better ratings from consumers than Apple. While this is definitely true for the report, it’s important to note that it was released in May 2014, and therefore, doesn’t show any boost that Apple might have gotten from the launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The ACSI releases fresh data each May, and it will be very interesting to see what the numbers for Galaxy S5 and iPhone 6 show in 2015.
