Rita Hayworth’s Grandson, Andrew Embiricos, Found Dead in NYC

Rita Hayworth’s grandson Andrew Embiricos was found dead on Sunday night in his New York City appartment. A cause of death has not yet been determined, but authorities believe that it was suicide.

According to the New York Daily News, Embiricos, 25, was found with a plastic bag over his head. The medical examiner determined that Hayworth’s grandson died at around 8:30 last night and noted that the cause of death was an “apparent suicide.”

Embiricos is the son of Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, Rita Hayworth’s daughter, and Greek shipping heir Basil Embiricos. He was a graduate of Fordham University with a degree in psychology.

The NY Daily News also reports that Embiricos was involved in several charities. He started a Facebook group that gave clothes to the homeless and worked with HIV/AIDS advocacy groups and the Alzheimer’s Association. His grandmother, Rita Hayworth, suffered from Alsheimer’s disease.

But People reports that Embiricos also had a darker side. Embiricos was an amateur porn enthusiast and posted several videos, under an alias, to different porn sites. He had also been battling HIV and had been in and out of rehab. The New York Daily News reports that Embriricos had also attempted suicide at least once before.

Village Voice gossip columnist Michael Musto, who knew Embiricos, wrote:

“I’m deeply saddened by the loss of someone with such radioactive charisma. He was a strikingly handsome, personable guy who radiated charm no matter what crisis he was weathering.”

MaryKate Wilson, spokeswoman for the Alzheimer’s Association, said

“Princess Yasmin Aga Khan is a longtime member of the Alzheimer’s Association family. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this difficult time.”
