When a young fan of a celebrity dies, usually no one notices. Not in India perhaps. When Unnikrishnan, a young fan of Tamil superstar Vijay died after falling off a ledge while he was installing a huge flex board promoting the actor’s latest movie, no one expected the actor himself to arrive at his funeral to offer his condolences. But that is exactly what actor Vijay did, according to The Times Of India.
Earlier last week, Tamil actor Vijay, who is a superstar from the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, released his latest movie, Kaththi. As is the case with his fans who dot all the southern Indian states of India, the release of the film was marked with celebrations and functions all over south India. In Kerala, members of the local Vijay Fans association decided to install a huge flex advertising board to promote the film. In the midst of the installation, Unnikrishnan, a die-hard Vijay fan fell off a ledge and was seriously injured. Even though he was admitted to a local hospital, the doctors there could not save his life. Actor Vijay was informed about the tragic death of one of his die-hard fans. He initially released a statement which read.
“I deeply mourn and extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Sri.Unnikrishnan from Vadakkanchery, who lost his life during the celebrations yesterday. The loss of my loved one is irrecoverable and will remain in my heart forever. I humbly request all fans to show your support in ways that do not endanger your life and the lives of those around you, especially during celebrations and festivals like Deepawali. Kindly take adequate safety and security measures, otherwise these kind of incidents gives unbearable pain. Your respect for yourself is a sign of your respect for me.”
What the actor did next was unbelievable!
Not only did actor Vijay attend the funeral service of his fan, he also donated an amount of Rupees 300,000 (USD 4900) to the grieving family as a fund for immediate assistance. He didn’t stop there. He has also agreed to take care of the financial needs of the bereaved family for the foreseeable future. When he met the family members of Unnikrishnan, he couldn’t control his emotions and actually wept like a baby as Vijay Fans Association reports.
India is by far, the world’s biggest film maker. Over 900 feature films in several languages are made in this country each year. The famous term Bollywood refers to only the Hindi language film industry which is only a part of the large industry in India. One of the biggest regional film fraternity in India is the Tamil language film industry based out of the southern Indian city of Chennai. One of Asia’s highest paid actors – and India’s answer to Chuck Norris, Rajinikanth too belongs to the Tamil film industry.
