Alison Sweeney Says Goodbye Next Week: ‘Days Of Our Lives’ Star Talks Leaving Show
Alison Sweeney says goodbye next week as the character of Sami Brady leaves Days of Our Lives and fans are bracing themselves. It’s already been a rocky month with the supposed death of her love, EJ DiMera, and now the character of Sami is leaving Salem as well. After playing the role for nearly 22 years, Sweeney is opening up about leaving the show and moving on to other projects.
Sweeney tells TV Guide that the cast shot the Days of Our Lives goodbye scenes coming up next week about four months ago, but they still hurt. Soap Opera Digest shares that Sweeney’s last day as Sami on the show will air on Wednesday, October 29. Fans learned many months ago that both James Scott and Alison Sweeney had quit the show but now viewers are having to say those final farewells to the long-time DOOL staples.
When asked who will miss Sami the most, Sweeney says that it’s her. She reminisces a bit about all the final scenes, such as Sami and Will or Sami and Nicole, she went through. It’s clear that each one was emotional and tough for her.
TV Guide shares that while Scott went out via EJ’s supposed death, it seems Sami has a less taxing departure. She will head to Los Angeles to meet with studio executives regarding putting the expose story Will wrote on-screen.
Alison says it gives her a giggle to think of how Sami Brady is heading to Los Angeles to throw herself into the entertainment business. However, that doesn’t mean she wasn’t a bit disappointed that Sami and EJ didn’t get a “happily ever after” ending.
The Days of Our Lives star says that she’s a romantic at heart, so she initially was bummed to hear that the show would kill off EJ rather than have “EJami” ride off into the sunset together. However, she says that time and perspective have given her the chance to see that many great romances end in tragedy, so perhaps this is fitting for EJ and Sami. While James Scott left the show a handful of episodes ago, Alison Sweeney says goodbye next week on the October 29 show.
In real life, Alison continues to host The Biggest Loser and she’s been doing some work behind the cameras as well as spending time with her family. It’s clear that the DOOL star is already thinking about popping back in to Salem, at least occasionally. Sweeney acknowledges that the writers made sure to write Sami out in a way that wasn’t permanent. She adds that Days of Our Lives celebrates their 50th anniversary next year and there’s no way she’s missing it.
Did Days of Our Lives handle the exits in satisfying ways for the characters of EJ DiMera and Sami Brady? While the departures of Scott and Sweeney came for very different reasons, the timing made for interesting challenges and opportunities for the show.
