Keanu Reeves’ acting ability is often compared to that a log — with countless memes mocking his faux-dramatic poses. But that’s something Reeves might never be able to shake. After all, Keanu came to prominence for playing a dumb guy in the 1989 comedy classic Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. According to co-star Alex Winter, Reeves may be back to revive the role soon with Bill and Ted 3.
Winter recently told Yahoo Movies that a draft for Bill and Ted 3 has been in the works for several years now. Of course, Keanu and Alex won’t be able to play teenagers anymore, setting the film to follow Bill and Ted 20 years ago and how the two would have adapted — or rather, not adapted — to growing up.
“[Bill & Ted] will be 40-something and it’s all about Bill and Ted grown up, or not grown up. It’s really sweet and really f—-ing funny… But it’s a Bill & Ted movie, that’s what it is. It’s for the fans of Bill & Ted. It fits very neatly in the [series]. It’s not going to feel like a reboot. The conceit is really funny: What if you’re middle-aged, haven’t really grown up and you’re supposed to have saved the world and maybe, just maybe, you kinda haven’t?”
Cult fans of the original Bill and Ted have, of course, been waiting on rumors that another installment is coming to theaters for several years now. Hopefully, the project will still be able to capitalize on a lull in Reeve’s output; Keanu currently has six projects in the works after being relatively silent the last few years. As is usually the case, says Winter, small rumors spread and get fans hyped up long before the final product is anywhere near completion.
“The thing we had going against us is that word got out. That was kind of a bummer. It just takes a long time to put a movie together. Now we’re having to build this thing in public, which is fine. I just feel bad [the fans] have to get dragged through this long, boring, protracted process.”
Though the project may have been delayed over the years, it has never been far from the minds of Reeves and Winters. Alex said that Keanu and the original writers have been eager to return for Bill and Ted 3 for several years.
“Me and Keanu and [original writers] Chris [Matheson] and Ed [Solomon] are all very close and have remained close over the years. We’d be having dinner and we’d be like, ‘is there a point? Is there a way in?’ We’d kick an idea around and go no and we would leave it alone for a bunch of years. I guess about four years ago we had an idea together that we thought was pretty great. I think it was because so much time had gone by that it was great.”
As fans await Bill and Ted 3’s release, they can still revisit Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter’s classic performance in the 1989 original and its sequel, Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey.
