Bill & Ted 3 is finally coming to theaters — we think. We’ve been hearing about the upcoming film for years now, while star Keanu Reeves has been out and about promoting other films. Now we’re finally hearing from Reeves’ co-star Alex Winters, and so far it looks like it’s still a go.
While Winters had spent most the 90s and millennium away from the limelight, Winters is ready to jump back into his flannel for an upcoming third film. Winters spoke to Yahoo about the film that’s been 23-years in the making after the sequel Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey.
Since 23 years has passed between the sequels, some things will probably have to change, right? Obviously, since the 20-something actors are now in their 40s, but according to the actor-turned-director, the upcoming film still has its heart.
“[Bill & Ted] will be 40-something and it’s all about Bill and Ted grown up, or not grown up. It’s really sweet and really f—-ing funny…But it’s a Bill & Ted movie, that’s what it is. It’s for the fans of Bill & Ted. It fits very neatly in the [series]. It’s not going to feel like a reboot. The conceit is really funny: What if you’re middle-aged, haven’t really grown up and you’re supposed to have saved the world and maybe, just maybe, you kinda haven’t?”
Hearing some details about the upcoming film is quite the relief. Last time Keanu Reeves was asked about the film, he told MTV that everyone was still struggling with coming up with a script.
Back in 2013, Reeves was vague.
“There’s lots of subterfuge and conspiracy theories. There’s a whole thing… I might have to do one of those independent press, conspiracy, other-name kind of [statements] explaining why it hasn’t happened yet, because it’s pretty dark out there. There’s all sorts of stuff and it just can’t — it’s just — there’s darkness out there that’s keeping it from happening… It’s that part of the story where it’s looking grim. It’s the dark period of the idea!”
That said, it’s clear that the darkness has faded since that interview in 2013. Winters alluded that the news of the upcoming film got leaked too early and put a pause on things, but now it seems like everything is a-okay.
“The thing we had going against us is that word got out. That was kind of a bummer. It just takes a long time to put a movie together. Now we’re having to build this thing in public, which is fine. I just feel bad [the fans] have to get dragged through this long, boring, protracted process.”
So when is Bill & Ted 3 coming out exactly? We’re not sure, but Winters insists that all the key members are in place, which means Keanu is on board, the producers are in place, and the financiers are good to go. We hope the next big announcement will be that filming has started.
