‘Mockingjay’ Movie Trailer: President Snow’s Panem Address

The Hunger Games trilogy of novels has caught fire and now that the first movie in the Mockingjay two-part series is set to hit theaters in the fall, Lionsgate has begun leaking movie trailers to heighten the anticipation of the release. This video, “President Snow’s Panem Address” is the first in what is certain to be a series of trailers that will be released throughout the duration of the summer into early fall.

In this, the first teaser for Mockingjay Part 1, the tone is that of a propagandist message and virtually dares anyone to resist the system. President Snow delivers this very chilling speech:

“Since the dark days, our great nation has known only peace. Ours is an elegant system, conceived to nourish and protect. Your districts are the body. The Capitol is the beating heart. Your hard work feeds us, and in return, we feed and protect you. But if you resist the system, you starve yourself. If you fight against it, it is you who will bleed.”

This trailer leads one to believe that this movie is geared to be a psychological adventure-thriller. However, a despondent and unwilling Katniss spends most of the movie resisting the call to step up into a leadership position as part of the rebellion against the Capitol. In fact, the guileless heroine seems almost to completely give up on her missions altogether and gets lost momentarily to drug addiction. She seems to only engage when it’s necessary. This demeanor is a definite change from the fearless Katniss in that we saw earlier in the series.

Of course Jennifer Lawrence will reprise the role of Katniss Everdeen in Mockingjay Part 1. Other familiar faces are Josh Hutcherson as Peeta, who has apparently been brain-washed after being captured by the Capitol, Liam Hemsworth portrays Gale Hawthorn, Woody Harrelson is back in the role of Haymitch Abernathy, and Julianne Moore is, of course, President Alma Coin.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 movie is slated for official release on November 21. Part two is also in post-production and is due for release one year later, in 2015. The Hunger Games trilogy is based on three novels written by Suzanne Collins, with the screenplay written by Danny Strong and Peter Craig. Francis Lawrence, who also directed The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, also sat in the director chair for both Mockingjay movies.
