Remember when Dave Chappelle was so popular Comedy Central was offering him $50 million to continue performing on the Chappelle Show? Well those days are over and now he’s went from funnyman to being heckled off the stage at an hour-long charity event in Miami.
That’s not to say he’s lost his funny all together, last month in New York City he gave an impromptu performance that left fans cheering and begging for more.
According to onlookers Chappelle stopped his show several times to answer text messages which led to the booing and heckling that eventually “threw off his game” and left him stumbling all over himself.
CNN’s Roland S Martin Tweeted of the event:
“This Dave Chappelle set is bizarre.”
Martin went on to note:
“He’s spent more time going back & forth with one audience member, & pretty much stopped telling jokes,” and “One woman just yelled, ‘Can you tell a joke so we can enjoy ourselves!’ He got texted four times during his show and actually checked them. Then Dave started talking to me, asking if I was putting this on CNN. Yes, from the stage! He’s been on stage 46 minutes & told one joke.”
You’d figure Chappelle, a comedy veteran would know how to deal with hecklers, perhaps his self-created fall from grace has left him doubting his own abilities.
